I've tried to open gmail on two computers here at home and I get a blank screen, not even a "loading." Anybody else experiencing this?

edit: added OT

I was opening google contacts by opening gmail, then moving to contacts. It worked. Suddenly google changed the URL for contacts, so the process hung up.

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Sounds like you have some port settings that are wrong on your router.

Nope, Gmail.com loads fine for me here.

The question then arising, who changed the port settings? It worked okay last night. And what's an example of a port setting that would stop one site from loading? I know others might be blocked if one is, but ? ? ?

Before I wrote the first post, I restarted both computers that wouldn't load gmail. After seeing Mac's latest post, I tried it out before rebooting. gmail came right up.

Whatever it was had a time component, which makes me think it was neither my computer(s) nor modem/router.

Gmail had an update a couple of days ago.
It looks a little different.
Could be that your computer didn't like it without a re-boot.

After I experienced it not loading, I restarted it. I rebooted each computer two times. Could be that my computer didn't like it without a reboot, but I did so.

Why would this be a matter of port settings?

I don't know if it's related, but I had terrible problems with one of my computers being slow when I was using Chrome- not responding and just pissing me off to the point that I wanted to Frisbee it through a window. I started seeing FireFox activity on the task bar and it became more frequent, then I was seeing FireFox trying to update, even though I haven't used it in months. I uninstalled FireFox and whaddayano, my computer is working very nicely- it hasn't done any of the things that were so annoying.

I have no freakin' idea. However, one of our respected colleagues wrote this:

If you perceived some kind of disrespect in my question, read it aloud, in a monotone and if you still perceive that disrespect, see a specialist.

There are two parts to what you just asked.

You missed this one: I gave him the respect of assuming that the possible reason that he posited, ports having been changed, might have caused the problem.

The other part is that if I state that I did something respectfully, that is not a comment on whether or not you did. Have you ever heard of an exchange like this:

He: "Darling, you look beautiful today!"
"She: Oh, yeah? Well, what are you saying about how I look the rest of the time?"

In this made-up conversation, which some of us have heard, she acts as though his positive statement contains a buried negative. My statement that I did something respectfully does not accuse you of anything. (Again, a sarcasm font would help; that would have been written without the sarcasm font.)

Why did you need to point out that you answered his question respectfully? We aren’t in court and this forum is more casual than needing to write in that style. Maybe it would have been better to begin the reply with “Respectfully,...”.

That would have had a totally different meaning.

I believe it was respectful of me to reply to what he had asked. So I guess, yeah, maybe it WAS disrespectful of you not to reply to what he had asked, but instead to ask him why it was a question at all.

Let's ask Westom!
