When there is no repercussions for doing bad things, people will continue to do bad things. period. Set examples, by ENFORCED law. The right laws. The bigger problem is liberal governing bodies have their head up their azz (we all know they give a ratz patooty about anything but power and money).

Steal streaming movies? Nothing happens.

Steal car radios? Nothing happens.

Steal on Texas soil? Make sure the body is on your property, state your life was, threatened, they take the body to the morgue and you're a local hero. There are indeed good laws in come lands.

Cops told my dad years ago.

"You catch that scumbag in your car, march him into the house at gun point, have him stand just inside the door, then shoot him in the head.".

Done and done.

The cop told him to do it that way, so there would be no blood on the carpet....

Friends and I caught a guy stealing, and we did do something about it. Dumb smuck was found in the city park one morning, stripped naked and hog tied. He knew better than to say something...

Where would you draw the line on this? Shop lifting, pirating copy writed content, tax evasion or insurance fraud? I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who hasn't stolen something.

This is one reason why I pressed him about the death penalty. I figured if he was just pissed off and bloviating about things, and spewed out that thieves should be put to death, then asking him seriously about the death penalty would pin down one data point on his scale of things.

And your question is equally valid.

The death penalty comes from the Bible. Here's another thing, often misunderstood, that also comes from the Bible: an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

A Biblical scholar I've heard speak on this says there aren't any recorded instances of a person who, having busted someone's tooth, got his same tooth busted; same for "an eye." But the point was that, at the time in history when this rule was set down, it was normal for the offense of murder to be avenged by murdering the murderer AND his whole damn family. "An eye for an eye" was a call to punish IN KIND and IN DEPTH. (Sorry, but depth is the best word I could think of for this.)

So that concept is the attempt to do what you ask about: make the punishment fit the crime. Thievery should not be met with death, but it should be met with loss of something important for the thief.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Your view, not mine.  If you steal, you die.  I don't give a shit what the bible says.  If you can't be a decent enough human being to not steal from others, then you don't deserve to be on the same earth breathing the same air.  This country is full of piece of shit that couldn't care less who they hurt along their path of thievery.  Why on earth should I care about them losing their life?  The only good thief is a dead thief!!!!!

I took this subject to one extreme earlier and we ended up with what I think is a valid position: murderers have no right to their lives. And you agree. Now let's look at the other end of the scale.

Did you NEVER steal ANYTHING when you were a kid? Should you have been killed? Should your child, or... a nephew or niece, aunt or uncle, grandparent? Friend? be killed for stealing a piece of gum from someone?

Is there a level of thievery low enough, or a personal relationship between you and the thief so important, that you do not think the thief should be killed?

No, I did not.  I cannot speak about any family as I do not know of any that stole.  Most people are shocked to learn that in my 43 years of life, I have never even had a drink of alcohol.  If you want to live your life as a decent person, you do not take what is not yours, period.

With how many people I see so proud of their hacked firesticks, it's hard to believe those aren't legal. I sometimes feel like I'm the only one without one.

Those bodies would stack up very, very fast.

You know a long time ago, horse thieves were given the death sentence here in the USA. They hung them.

I believe the reasoning behind this is that those hitching onto another persons account will get hooked and want their own account.

Not usually going to work, but knowing that people aren't too bright..... LOL

You know in some countries, convicted thieves have their hand cutoff if the theft is severe.

And you know what, they don't have a huge problem with thieves. Just saying.

No, they just tend to have problems with human rights in general, oppress people who don't observe their religion and heavily tax them, often kill others because Allah wants them to and if they die, they think they'll win 72 virgins. Virgin what, they don't know. I hope it's virgin pigs.

I know the court system is full of judges who want to give these shitbags a second chance, but why do they have to start after the 100th offense? While I agree that everyone deserves a fair & speedy trial, I think defense attorneys should grow a set and stop wasting taxpayer time and money, lying to protect their clients from conviction and allowing dangerous criminals to run rampant after getting them off because they have had a rough life.

My subdivision had another 'visitor' last night, checking car doors. I think it's time to make them fear those of us who are sick of seeing them do their one-stop shopping in our neighborhood. I think it's time for some 'Suburban justice'. Hell, some of us don't sleep through the night, anyway- we may as well go for a walk and if we happen to find a pickup softball game, we'll already have a few bats.
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

Not sentenced by a court- that wouldn't be a proportional penalty.
