I believe the reasoning behind this is that those hitching onto another persons account will get hooked and want their own account.

Not usually going to work, but knowing that people aren't too bright..... LOL

More likely, it's for making the account portable although rubbing NetFlix in the faces of non-users is a good way to make them sign up.

I took this subject to one extreme earlier and we ended up with what I think is a valid position: murderers have no right to their lives. And you agree. Now let's look at the other end of the scale.

Did you NEVER steal ANYTHING when you were a kid? Should you have been killed? Should your child, or... a nephew or niece, aunt or uncle, grandparent? Friend? be killed for stealing a piece of gum from someone?

Is there a level of thievery low enough, or a personal relationship between you and the thief so important, that you do not think the thief should be killed?

There's a bit of a difference between a kid stealing gum and killing someone because life means nothing to the killer.

Ignore the news outlet if you want- what would you do about the turd who did this?

[Link: foxnews.com]

An 18 year old in MKE was stopped by the police and while they were outside of his car (maybe it was his, maybe not), he drove off and put both of the cops in the hospital. His dad was on TV news saying that he was just an 18 year old kid who made a mistake. Cue the sound of screeching car tires. I saw the dad's name and recognized it, so I looked for it on the WI Circuit Court records site and what do you know? He was in there along with his father and grandfather. Crime in that family is generational and the 18 year old's grandfather stole my bike when I was 15- I chased him and it's probably lucky that I didn't catch him because he was with two others. The 18 year old's dad pulled a knife on his 4th grade teacher when he was 9 years old (they had moved into my subdivision from a really shitty part of MKE- must have liked it when he was looking for bikes to steal) and I knew the teacher, who quit after hearing that the school didn't see a way of disciplining the little dear without appearing racist. She lived at the end of the street, due South- if they had disciplined the little turd, I can only imagine what the others would have done to her.

I don't know how many times I have seen news reports with someone being told that something is against the law and the other person says "It ain't MY law!" but it's not just a few.

MKE just lost a 23 year old Police officer, who died after being thrown from the squad car during a chase- the idiot they were chasing told the court "I though you guys couldn't chase unless it was for a felony". He was clocked at 95 MPH on a city street- the chase started 15 blocks from where the squad car crashed (witnesses said it rolled more than ten times before landing on its roof next to a bridge) and he's facing 11 felony charges including being in possession of a gun, in possession of narcotics and he had his little kid in the car at the time of the chase! He's also facing separate charges of selling Fentanyl as Heroin and providing the drugs that killed a woman.

What would you do with him?

The death penalty...regardless of your crime...should not exist.

Why?

Because witnesses, cops, attorneys, judges make mistakes...and tell lies.

Many times witnesses cant even remember what the criminal looked like and they just guess at the line up. Or they wait for the cop to lead them to the "right" one. Cops will often make an assumption early on and stop the investigation and just try and manipulate reality to fit their guess. Video tape doesn't always tell the whole story.

I don't really care about the moral aspects of it. We as a species are always at war, we factory farm animals for food and i just murdered like a million insects in my back yard a couple days ago because i don't want my dogs to get tics so obviously humanity is cool with killing. But...Until we have technology that can allow us to look into peoples minds and know for sure i don't think the death penalty has a place in modern society.

Not sentenced by a court- that wouldn't be a proportional penalty.

Yes, yes it was.

I hear ya on the insects- I greased a bunch of ants yesterday that were loitering outside of my door.

Half of the time, witnesses can't remember what they had for breakfast, but what if there's video and other forensic evidence of a major crime, with the video showing that the person never left the scene and it can be proved that it wasn't edited? Pretty hard to say they didn't do it or it was a case of mistaken identity. If a cop loses sight of someone they're chasing, it can cause reasonable doubt but if there's nobody else in the area who comes close to the description, it's probably not going to.

What would you want if someone killed a member of your family?

You know in some countries, convicted thieves have their hand cutoff if the theft is severe.

And you know what, they don't have a huge problem with thieves. Just saying.

I did two projects in Saudi Arabia over the course of seven years. Long projects with delays in the middle.

One day near the end, the manager of our customer's villa told us that his family had gone shopping the night before at one of the large malls there in Riyadh. He was the driver and there were others to pay attention to other details like getting the kids in the car and unloading the shopping carts.

The next morning he went looking for something they had bought and they realized it was not there at home with them. He instantly freaked and went to check on the baby. Baby was there, no problem. But an entire shopping cart's worth of the purchase was nowhere to be seen.

They drove back to the mall and there, all by itself in the parking lot, was their shopping cart, full, as they had left it. It was even at the angle it would have been at based on the direction they had walked to the car. Nothing was missing.

A shopping cart? Full? Untouched? Yes, something keeps people from stealing!

YES there is a huge difference between those things. Goldenz had already agreed with the death penalty for murder, and was proposing it for stealing as well. My obviously egregious example, positing exactly what you just said, but asking him where he draws the line, was intended to tease out of him the details of how he felt about the death penalty for stealing.

He's human. I can't believe he has NEVER stolen anything. But he also wrote:

...I cannot speak about any family as I do not know of any that stole.

And in so doing, he has stated that he is unwilling to imagine his position. I never said anyone in his family stole anything. I asked if he would want the death penalty for them if they had. It's a poor philosopher who cannot do a thought experiment and conclude how he would behave.

Most people are shocked to learn that in my 43 years of life, I have never even had a drink of alcohol.

Where did that come from? That's a total change of subject!

Yes. Agreed. Death penalty, not so much.

Hmmm. These are two different opinions of what should happen.

We are obviously conflicted on these things. I'll submit that feelings get in the way of judging what should be done.

Here in California, they passed a bunch of laws over the last three years..... Release everyone who is "non-violent". To reduce prison overcrowding. Then reduce what qualifies as "violent" (now you can drug and rape a woman, and you can shoot a cop, and it's not considered violent) to further reduce crowding by releasing those on drug charges with violent add on charges. Add to that, they raised the $$ amount threshold for misdemeanor/felony from $500 to $900. So all these recently released upright citizens go around stealing anything under $900....
It's gotten crazy with all the petty theft.

Did I read that CA has become a sanctuary state? If they want to give everything to everyone, it's gonna cost someone and if they can't collect taxes from people who have nothing and few skills, the state has to reduce costs or go father in debt. Going against Federal Law and asking for Federal money probably won't go well.

I had a very similar incident in front of my own house. The F-kers took my notebook bag. I caught everything in CLEAR HD, gave to the cops and opened a case. They did NOTHING.
5 days later, I am sitting in my office PC, and all of the sudden my notebook teamviewer pops online. very excited, I log in into my pc and watch the person on the other end go to Facebook, fill out a criminal check and some emails. I also managed to take a screen shot of all the wifi ssids populating on the notebook.
After very little effort, I got a name and a few addresses.
Called the detective on the case, gave the info, the did NOTHING.
The next day I drove to the addresses I found as an option, opened my phone and confirmed the same SSIDs populating in the neighborhood on the second try.
Called 911, showed the report and lied that the “find my Mac “ is showing that my stolen computer is in that house. After some hesitation, the local PD cops knocked the door and came back with my full bag, computer, charger, papers, etc. they gave back to me and said “ you got lucky man. I suggest you leave, this is a dangerous neighborhood”. They did NOTHING to the person. End of story.

Sounds like fake, nobody can believe it!

And speaking on not seeming to have read a post, did the comment about possibly finding a pickup softball game not tell you anything?

Stealing a horse was very serious, but the death penalty would have violated the 8th Amendment, if it happened after the Bill Of Rights was ratified.

In the grand scheme of things, a stolen computer bag is important to you, but not to anyone else. They can't follow up on all leads- there's no way they have the staffing for that. My credit card number was used to buy something at the ATT store close to my house and I filed a report, but the PD apparently hasn't gotten the video from the store because I have already been compensated by my bank. Should the shitbag get away with it? Not if I was in charge, but the real world has more serious problems.

Once he had the cops at the house and they confirmed that his bag was there, it doesn't matter what the item was, it could be a pencil, he should have been arrested.  I know you are talking about the police work to get to that point, but once there, he should have been given a nice pair of shiny bracelets

I'm not going to ask the value of the bag and contents, but they'e not going to do this for a low dollar crime and in some places, it's doubtful that the prosecutor would do more than "please don't do this again".

My car was broken into and the douchebag ripped up the dash when he pried the head unit and equalizer out, then took my tool box- probably used my freaking tools to steal my own radio but before starting, he unscrewed the light bulb in the fixture next to my car. I removed the bulb without touching the glass, exhaled on it and saw fingerprints. I asked the cop if he wanted it for evidence and he said "Nah". I almost said "Thanks for the attempt".
