I think what you have here are a couple of older folks who may be unfamiliar with what "streaming" actually is.

When I was installing, I'd often run across people who thought Sonos had a monthly fee.  Older folks tend to be against monthly fees.

I assume they have an iphone/tablet?

Personally, I think you're doing them a dis-service by not at least letting them test drive one for a week.  Take your pick Sonos Play 1 or Heos unit.  Stop by, connect it, show them how to use it, and let them play with it for a week.

At the end of the week, if they want to go back to the stone age, take them.

For the record, I installed exactly 2 Russound units and 2 Nuvo Grand Concerto units.  The Russound units are still working (although the only 2 sources are now sonos Connects).  The Grand Concertos both died and Nuvo no longer carried the streaming unit (MPS4).  Same customer, 2 different homes.  They  got replaced by 30 sonos connect amps.

^This
I had 2 nuvo systems go bad also.
You can use in wall / on wall touchscreens with Sonos too, ipad mini, ipod touch, etc.

Very satisfied with the Russound products. Easy to use, reliable. My C-5 system is approaching 9 years installed.

Good call ! Dropping off a Play1 with them next week

After reading all the comments and suggestions, I think educating them may be the best route to providing them with the best system.

I think I may have been trying to yield to the wants of the client due to the size of the project and had horse blinders on.

For anyone who is fimilar with Sonance Amps & Sonos, are the Sonance digital input modules for the DSP amps a must for pairing with a Sonos Connects.

Please educate, thanks

Don't use a Play1. Older people who don't understand tech will now think about Sonos as a bunch of Play1's around the house. Use a Connect, your amp of choice, DAC, and a GOOD pair of bookshelfs. Let them experience something good and tell them that on the permanent install the equipment will be hidden and the speakers can be installed in the wall or ceiling. When doing demos always show them what is possible and then let work back to the price they want to pay. Never demo junk.

I would suggest the Parasound 4DAX into your choice of amp. Ive done a handful of the Sonance DSP amps with the DIMs and the 4DAX with amp (Audio Control in our case) sounded better IMO

It happens all the time "i want to keep my VCR" "I only listen to AM" "all of our music is on ipods"...

Then we recommend that they get an Atonomic Music Server or Kaliedescape or Apple TV...they reluctantly agree...they never touch their VCR/CD/Cassette deck/Tuner again.

I like that option. Unfortunately Parasound is not available in Canada.

Been there. Customer will insist that we include a CD player and they will specifically check that the CD player works on day one, but that is the last time that the CD player is used. At this point I am rarely faced with including a VCR, but when the subject is brought up, I ask "when was the last time that you used the VCR?", and the answer is usually 199x. (Fat chance that it is still working or that the tapes are playable)

Fred,

Wasting your time. They'll never understand this. What a client wants has NO meaning to a lot of people.

Guys, if a client as a bunch of personal videos on VCR tapes, they might want to keep them on tape, and might actually want to see them now and then.

How clueless, and how much like a sleazy car salesman, are you guys?

Nice Canadian company makes what you are asking for
http://www.nexusaudiosystems.com/

If they just want music sources to play in various rooms without a lot of fuss, this is pretty easy to use.
Not entirely sure what you would do with the USB collection, in fact a lot of systems similar to Nexus (Russound, Nuvo ect) will probably all have no way to navigate a USB stick.
If you can get them an Ipod music player and transfer the music from the USB stick to it, Nexus (and others) have Ipod docks that can be connected and meta data can be viewed on the keypad.

20 years of "i have a bunch of_____" laser discs/records/cds/VHS you name it. After the ipod docks hit the streets all the CD players would still have the demo disc in the tray that i used to test the system with when we installed it.

People don't know what they want until we tell them. Same with cars. No one walks into a car dealer knowing they want the latest features but they get them...and then cant live with out them...and all of a sudden don't care about the old crap they thought they couldn't live without.

Blu-ray players are next on the chopping block. Except for dedicated theaters no one is using them now that they can stream.

Because part of our job is to educate people. To show them what is possible. Would someone ever buy a lighting system if you did not present the concept to them? How many people have known about a URC or RTI style remote without us showing it to them? I'm amazed you guys are taking this approach.

I leave a play 3 speaker hooked up for a few days to try out. If you have never tried this, you should. You will see lots of smiles. If they don't need it after the trial period is done, then that is fine also. I guarantee that it will generate a large number of sales.

We are in a business that requires us to present new technology at every opportunity to create interest.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

The Nexus audio Phantom controller is pretty neat (it adds phantom control signals to existing speaker only wire runs to allow for smart controls where you previously had just a dumb volume knob). Does anyone else do this?
