as a former installer and ISF certified video nut i'm picky about video, which is why i still own a 8 year old 42" XR5 NEC plasma. So its time for bigger, newer better but i don't play with consumer displays anymore so i don't have real world everyday experience and I need advice.

I've been looking at the Sony XBR65c900C and ready to pull the trigger today, but now read some reviews that complain about edge bleed. I watch sports, movies and regular TV, so need the all around best display i can get for $2k with excellent blacks, no motion artifacts and good processing. I'm still in the AV business so I can buy Sony, Samsung, LG etc from distributors.

any input you guys and gals can provide is appreciated!

The 930 has the built in speakers so I think you're referring to the new "D" series, which will be out of my price range. Sigh.

Any input on LG or Samsung?

What's wrong with speakers? You get significantly better black levels with that tinted glass.

The 940Ds don't have speakers on them, but if you can find a XBR65X930C it will calibrate ruler-flat.

Probably be the Sony, any chance of going over your budget? I think the new Sony and the LG OLED will be both past your budget...

I liked Samsung up until abut 2-3 years ago, now it's more smart features than PQ, the PQ is the most important thing for me, as a big dish user, I feed my displays with some of the best video quality available. You must keep this in mind as well, what will you be feeding the tv? always remember garbage in garbage out. If you have something like pizza dish with very over compressed second generation feeds it will not be that good, some rural cable also suffer from very over compressed feeds. And basically any cable company that uses the Comcast headend in the sky system (HITS) distribution system [Link: comcastwholesale.com] this is already second generation over compressed feeds, at one time there HD feeds were not that bad as I had them coming in direct on my dish, but they where not encrypted and more channels have been added to the muxes, I have not seem them open for a few years now.and keep in mind I was getting it direct, cable company's will redistribute and re-compress this already redistributed and re-compressed system.

Cable company's with a true headend and proper setup distribution should have the best image, pass by your local cable company, if they have a dish farm, they are most probably getting the direct satellite and fiber distribution, and then hopefully not messing around with them to much before they feed it to there customers.

Anyways enough nerd talk here, happy Easter!

Triple your budget and get the LG OLED :). I have the 55 inch and boy is it a joy to not notice artifacts that you list/common with LCDs. The only drawback to it is it limiting maximum picture brightness when most of the screen is bright. Outside of that, it is a superb display.

The 55 inch is cheaper so you could give up size and get that for another $1K over your budget.

Agreed. Nothing comes close.

4k on a no OLED budget is Sony all the way.

so no high speed motion artifacts on the OLEDs? I've heard that might be a concern...

No, response is very fast. Mind you, the fast response may show judder or other issues in the source but overall, this is one of the benefits of OLED over regular LCD.

Brian,

I can think of only 2 reasons NOT to buy an OLED, if you really want the best display currently on the market. And I don't think you'll need to triple your $2k budget to get a 65" OLED either.

1. If this will be in an extremely bright room? OLEDS are not dark but not nearly as bright as an LED in torch mode. If the room is of average ambient light, then you will love it. Similar to a plasma in brightness.

2. There is not enough track record to the long term reliability of OLEDs, so we don't really know how long these displays will last ...and even how reliable they are in the short term. Not saying they fail early, just saying we don't have enough data to really know.

But the black levels on these will give you a chubby. As good as plasma (maybe better) and the image is smoother than a plasma. Any motion artifacts witnessed will most certainly be from the source material, not the display.

They are better than any plasma I read a review that said their equipment couldn't properly measure the black level because it was so low. They are so beautiful. I have not seen motion on them. Only demo material. I would love to see some sports, etc.

I just sold 2 65" G6 sets that aren't out yet. Can't wait to see them. As soon as I can dump this turd of a 900c I will be replacing with a 65 E6 for myself.

For your budget keep in mind their are three new series for 2016 B, E, G. Check em out
I love supporting product that supports me!

No way! Crazy Eddie's 10 year old, 100 nit-outputting, well past its half-life display surely must STILL be better ;)

so in case anyone is interested I wound up getting a Sony XBR55x930D, newest on the market. overall impression is slightly above good, which is crappy considering its one of the better displays on the market. My old plasma was superior in terms of (at least how I perceive) black level and contrast. detail in black areas disappears

Off axis viewing is my biggest complaint as black level drop and color shift occurs at less than 35 degrees off center. still watchable, sure but nothing like a plasma. I think i should've looked under a few more couch cushions for some $ for an OLED. like moving away from TDC from a pair of Martin Logans.

sitting on a couch near dead center it looks damn good on upconverted crap from the cable provider, actually quite surprised how good it looks. 4k streamed from our builtin Amazon app looks stunning. happy again

Do love the android operating system, but still havent figured out how this replaces the chromecast because i cant seem to mirror from our mobile devices yet.
