Wait until he is drunk, and give him the bill for the original amount. If he decides to tip you, you could offend him by turning down his money.

That way you did the honest thing, and upped the odds for a 100% tip

I honestly cant believe that there are people on the planet who would take advantage of anyone...even if the "mark" makes it easy for the would be robber.

People have scammed others since they had something another person could want. Still, as much as many people shout that humans are all civilized and sophisticated, many are just turds. Someone is always more willing to scam their way to money and possessions than they are to get an honest job. After the last financial favor, I'm done letting people slide for a little longer or loaning money. Two examples and I knew one for over 25 years, the last for over 35 years. Both times, the last I heard from either was when they said "I'm not trying to scam you- I'll call tomorrow".

Scamming a stranger is one thing, doing it to someone they know is inexcusable.

I'd go after the last one if the total was bigger and if his kid's mom hadn't just died. I saw the other guy's name when he and his wife were thanked in an obituary, but there's no way I'm going to confront someone at a funeral, even if I could have watched and waited for them to leave.
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

If I give the guy a second chance and he still volunteers more money, it's not scamming him. I'll send a thank you note praising him for the generous tip and tell him how grateful I am. Play it dumb and make him a hero.

highfigh, that's a pretty interesting collection of contradictory paragraphs, especially the one that says there are certain people whom it's okay to victimize.

Doesn't it occur to you that most scams are perpetrated on people whom the scammers don't know? And that's okay?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I never wrote anything about scamming a stranger being acceptable and my previous comments should have made you see that I don't have a soft spot in my heart for dirtbags who do that.

What would you do ...

Anybody been here before?

not me
Should I just ignore the drunken B.S. and avoid his shame? (yes, he's married. Yes she's smart enough to know this is a drunken stooper)

I see it as a simple question, professional or not? Telling him you will send an e-mail was the right thing, but if a client was trying to negotiate something lower it would be a NO, the bill (or quote) is the bill (or quote) and the same is also true here.

Always do the right thing by your clients. If they choose to tip you, that's their choice.
