My plan was to send a follow up email to tell him the TV is being repaired at the original rate. I won't bring up the phone call other than his approval for the repair.

Good responses gents.

That's the proper way to handle it. No need to bring it up and potentially embarrass the guy.

The Nordstrom's employee manual... do you know how many pages it is????

It is a single card, that says: "Do the right thing".

You mean, they have to get married?

Obviously there's no question on how this should be handled if you have any moral value system in place.

I had a builder double pay for a job (he wrote a check, and his wife also wrote a check). Little over 15K.

I guess some here think I should have just kept my mouth shut and let his mistake be his problem?

That's sad. REALLY sad.

Just forget it ever happened and move on.

Good karma last a lot longer than that little money.

Taking advantage of drunk guys is not a good practice, that is for sure.

I'm heartened to see that nearly everyone here is responding that they would take the most ethical path!

It's nice to see that my belief that the great majority are honest and ethical, really is true.

I wonder for any public lurkers to see that some guys here in the industry even have to question taking advantage of a client...?

I don't think anyone would use this as an opportunity to make unearned money. My inquiry was aimed at how others would handle this awkward phone call.

Re: "NO! its not the same. This way you and me go home with extra money! are the ones who rob them".

Fixed it for you. Taking advantage of someone who's sober, drunk or drugged is bullshit.

Are you lashing out because of that time you got drunk and emptied out the ATM?

That's not 'lashing out'.

Never happened, but I know someone who gave his phone number to a stripper on a deposit slip for his checking account. Yeah, we went back for it.

I tried really hard to troll this thread. At the very least i expected something back from Bruce...but nothing. Maybe i should have waited until the weekend when the spirits are flowing.

I thought the subject of the OP was funny and sad all at the same time. Not the bit about the client being drunk and offering more money. Actually i found that to be sort of condescending. Almost like he thinks you are a stripper or prostitute who is already screwing him so why not screw him a little more. I was more interested because it reminded me of all the drunk idiots who passed through our little restaurant.

I honestly cant believe that there are people on the planet who would take advantage of anyone...even if the "mark" makes it easy for the would be robber. I am the guy who grabs a shopping cart that some loser left in their parking spot so that i can roll it back to the store. Every time i go to the grocery store. Every single time. I remind the cashier that our tomatoes/cilantro etc are the more expensive organic version because those kids never check. They just grab the first set of numbers to enter from the book. If i see someone drop money i chase them down and give it back to them. If i find a wallet or purse i hand deliver it to keep the post office employees honest.

No one taught this to me. This isn't part of some moral upbringing or lesson learned from life, tv or a book. It's common sense IMO that you don't steal things from people. There isn't any excuse for it. I don't care if you hate them or if they are VISA or if your children are starving. There is no justification for stealing.

I mentioned the starving children bit because i have heard that a million times "i will do what i gotta do if my kids are starving". Uh...how about you get a job or keep your job or have fewer children or drink less or buy a cheaper car or wait to get married etc... so that your children are not starving. MAYBE if we lived in a war zone where tanks are rolling through town and people are actually starving in the streets. But even then...what about the people you are stealing from?

I think people are thieves or they aren't. Those who think its okay to take what others have are going to do it no matter what. Some look for reasons why its okay and others just buy gloves and a ski mask.

Sure... that's what you say now, after you feel pressured by the rest here who are ethical! :-)

Not really. You never seemed like the type who would take advantage of others to me.

Yeah, my wife and I are also ones wheeling the carts into the grocery store, because we'd rather not see someones car get dinged.

I will add that I've known some people who got into really bad situations through no fault of their own. Sometimes, Shit happens to good people! When that occurs, unless other good people step up and help them out, things can go horribly wrong.

I will agree that the "I had to do it because of my kids." is an excuse. But there are likely some times where they actually felt that was the only way out. The fact they didn't have a support system that could or would help them out is the sad part. I can't fix that for everyone, but I'll do my best to help anyone who asks for or needs the help.

So glad to see that everyone at RC is passing the ethics test. Pats on the back all around!
