You could sell the equipment on EBAY and get something that can either affordably be supported by a local CI or something that is DIY friendly.

I' am not wanting to sell off my equipment. This is a project that I would like to complete myself. I understand that it is not to be programed by the general public. But that does not mean that DIY do not do it. I know it happens all the time, it is just a matter of finding people willing to offer help. I just need a little help in getting past this hick-up.

You say it a core setup issue, what do you mean by this? I've been wondering if there are ports I need to open, or forward to the controller. I can talk to the controller, and to the everything else. But when I try to update, it says the director cannot connect to the internet. When I bring up system manage on the controller it pass all the test but the internet connection. Any ideas on what I have done wrong here or what I need to do. My connection to the internet is;
ADSL modem to linksys wireless modem to a 18 port network switch.

WRT54G?

That router has known issues with C4.

Do you have a C4 account?

Do you have a Dealer?

If the answers to those 2 questions are no.. then you wont be able to update anything.

I did setup an account with control4, I tried to register my controller, but it said I was not necessary for 1.3.2. So your saying that my cheap router is the troublemaker. If that's the case could I just forward ports to the server or do I just need to kick it to the curb, what you suggest I replace it with?

I don't follow Control4, but that's a poor product if it's not compatible with one of the most popular routers in the history of home networking.

Now that Im home i found out that my router is a WRT160Nv2 and my controller is a control4 avm-mc1-b. My problem is;
Unable to obtain update version information from the web interface at url [Link: ]. Verify that internet access is available from director.

I went through and forwarded the ports I could find on the internet. I have turned off all firewalls, even the one in the router.

Thank you all for taking the time to chat with me.

Control4 is IP based and needs solid networking so bussines level equipment is recommended. The WRT54G although popular is not targeted for this market. I would not use this router with AMX/Crestron or any other control system.

Since when does "Most Popular" make it a good product?

If that were the case, wouldnt we all be selling Vizio and Bose?

Oh, and OP: You need to register your system for 1.6+ on the website. You want to upgrade everything to 1.7.2 right?

I had a system in my old home with the older Media Controller and 3 remotes, and a thermostat and a couple of switches working...PERFECTLY on the WRT54GS

Maybe since I ran aftermarket firmware on the router,
maybe it was the right size system,
but either way it worked.....

A few factors on router choice
1. The size of the system.
2. How reliable you want it to be.

I had 1-2 resets in the last year but I blame that on an old media controller.

The apple airport extreme has been my go to choice for the C4 systems.

Look there are probably many c4 installations that work fine with that router. And I am sure there are some massive AMX/Crestron installations that also work fine and they use that router. Is it good practice? No.

Our business is getting more and more complicated especially on the control and the media distribution sectors. A lot of things can go wrong and troubleshooting is very imponrtant. Trying to eliminate a few factors of failures and make troubleshooting easier by using good quality networking gear is a no brainer any more.

Expanding on networking: as everything now has an ethernet port and everything resides on the same network it will be very soon that we will be needing VLANS on almost every project we do. I know a lot of CIs already deploy VLANS in some of their big system but in the next few years the need will be bigger and we will need more network oriented guys working in our companies.

Why quote me completely

I agree and and wouldn't want a wrt54gs on an install with c4 or other network systems.... I just wanted to add that it's not a definitive problem 100%
It can work and has worked.

but,.....Best Practice is to -not- use the Linksys WRT54G in these

you can use my whole quote on "that" one.

Okay so after doing a lot more reading and searching, I was able to come to the solution for my problem.

So what I'm wondering is;

When I run the usb upgrade that I made, will I receive any sign as to when It safe to restart the controller?

I was able to get this to work on my own, and now have my equipment running on 1.7.4 and have started programming it.

Thank you for taking time read my post's, but this will be the last time utilize your forums.

Wow.. Your welcome!

you realize this forum is NOT a DIY focused forum right? We are [mostly] professionals here. Did you even try the link I gave you for the c4 forums? Many more DIY's there.
