Funny, my wife called me this morning saying "why won't the directv turn on?"... and since I changed some speakers around last night I couldn't convince her it wasn't something I did. :)

I was asking myself this morning WTF did I do because I was changing some programming around and was thinking I better get this fixed fast or I won't be able to leave the house...my wife says I can't leave well enough alone.

Just jumped on right now and was going to start a thread when I saw this one. I've had clients with no control and Ive had clients with power up problems. The latest call was from a client that had power up problems (HR-23) which the reboot fixed but the box came back up with no control. A second reboot fixed the control issue and everything was fine for a few hours and the box just did a self reset. All appears well but we will see.

Sounds like a perfect reason to put DTV boxes on remote controlable switched outlets. Log on, switch them off and on a couple of times, then send invoice, all without getting out of bed.

I used to hate updates and channel line up changes.....now I realize it is a reason for us to get in our clients faces and sell them a boatload of new stuff!

I was also digging around the back of the cabinet last night. I was trying to unplug a phone charger I had in there. So my thoughts this morning were "did I screw up and pull something out?" Then trying to explain to my wife how to trouble shoot the stuff so I could tell her what to do was like hitting my thumb with a hammer. I dont know how one of us didnt end up getting mad and hanging up on the other.

I told my wife that I finally implemented the 5-9 M-F TV lockout, so she would have more time to clean the house and call her clients.

Yes, I did survive the encounter, but now I know better to joke with her about the TV :-)

BTW, I did get two emails from DirecTV with different procedures. 11:21MST and 12:11MST.
First one:
Attention all Dealer Partners: The following HD/DVR model receivers are currently experiencing system lock up.

Affected models: HR20-100 & HR20-700 / HR21/22/23 + R22

Please note: A simple, 30 second process will restore functionality to your
customers’ hardware.

Resolution:
Complete a red button reset.
Wait for video and if video appears, issue is resolved. If you receive a grey screen, go to Step (3).
If you experience a grey screen for more than 3 minutes, complete another
red button reset.

This should resolve the system lock up and programming should return.
Our Engineering Department is aware and investigating the issue. We will update you with new information as necessary.

Thank you,

DIRECTV

And second one:

Effective today at 12:50pm MT (2:50pm ET) DIRECTV will be forcing all affected receivers to RESET. This will clear guide data and will restore normal functions and services to impacted customers with the following receivers: HR20-100 & HR20-700 / HR21 / HR22 / HR23 / R22.

Customers that have completed RESETs earlier will once again receive a RESET. Please advise customers not to interrupt the RESET process.

Thank you,

DIRECTV

So it seems that they did have two types of issues.

BTW, I do not know what kind of advanced, super hyper DVRs they're running, because the ones that I reset, take WAAAYYYYY longer to reset than the 30seconds they're quoting.

And this email came to me fifteen minutes ago:
You may have experienced a transmission glitch to your DIRECTV service. DIRECTV has fixed the problem and automatically reset the receivers. There's nothing further that you need to do. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this technical issue has caused.
Our promise is to provide you with the best television experience, and to resolve any issues that might arise as quickly as possible.
Thank you for being a valued DIRECTV customer.

This problem was so bad that they screwed everybody nationwide in the middle of the day when the customers could not possibly have had advance warnings.

What do they test their updates on, anyway?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

You sure that you didn't survive joking about housework, instead of joking about the TV?

Both of my newer receivers were frozen this morning. Red button go em both up and running. The living room one required two red button resets.

Amazing that they cannot reboot these things remotely after applying software update.

Oddly, no phone calls from clients (yet).
