pull power cord.   wait a minute.  plug it back in.      you may need to do this twice.   many people are having this issue.

One reset, one unplug. Back to normal

I had to do the same thing. The tech support number sucks. I tried 5 times to get to a person and 3 times DTV terminated the call.

it is the update for 3D. all 5 of my boxes were frozen and i have already fielded dozens of calls. most were fine after one RBR (red button reset), some required two. 3D on 6/11 channel 106. get your goggles ready

My wife called as I was on the way to work this morning. Kids were up and couldnt watch Curious George. After pulling the plug she finally got the box on. But then didnt have any IR control. I havent heard how many more resets it has taken to get the remote to work or if it is working yet.

DirecTV has the instruction for reboot right on their home page, just below the top banner. Click on Follow these steps to resolve issues you may be experiencing with your receiver.

Bottom line, call your current and old clients and offer a fix; it may spark a conversation about some upgrades. At the very least, you'll come out looking like a concerned CI, that's calling to help client with an issue that's obviously not caused by you or any equipment you sold.

I know some of you have IP enabled UPS units that can do the reboot remotely, I'm not so lucky.

Either way, if you reboot remotely or roll the truck, you're billing them for it, right?

I wish the a-holes could figure a way to send updates without locking up the boxes! This combined with COX's slow roll out of their new software is really chapping my ass. Don't they know all of our installs have the boxes high up in racks with RSH faces hahaaa

Ok I'm done bitching...billable service calls yay!

Thanks for the links, guys. However, it's almost as easy just to save others the steps and copy the instructions here.

from Mario's link:

Troubleshooting: Receiver Reboot Instructions

If your set top box is not responding to either your remote control or front panel button input please be advised that you will need to do the following to resolve the issue:

* Just flip the door down on the front of your set top box and press the red button. Be patient as the box may take up to one minute to respond to this reset.
* Let the system reboot until either a picture or grey screen appears on your TV.
* Then press the red button again, which will reboot your system a second time. This should resolve the issue.

DirecTV sent out an email to dealers that describes the same process slightly differently.

The twitter says this:

HDDVR customers: If your HDDVR will NOT power on, unplug the unit from the wall, wait 15sec, then replug, & repeat 1x to restore service.

That, interestingly, addresses not powering on, while the complaints I read about here, and the one customer call I got, had to do with control, not power on.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
