Had a pretty fun job today. Some B&W speakers powered by some McIntosh separates. Had a little trouble getting the preamp to take an internet connection (and some pretty confused techs at McIntosh), but after letting it sit on the network for half an hour it just started getting internet. Nice first post! Surprised no one has commented yet... tough crowd :) Looks like a great system, but really tiny room!

My accomplishment for this morning was getting my 30 year old car through California smog testing to renew the registration for another year.

A dead mouse fell on my head.
Kitchen speakers did not work. I pulled one out and lots of nasty stuff fell on me. :(
But I did walk away with a free Control4 HC800. Not because he felt bad about the mouse incident. We installed Phast in this house for the original owner. This guy bought it, and a year or so ago, had another company come take out the music portion of the Phast system and he put in C4. HC800 and a matrix audio switcher is all. Well, it mostly worked, kind of. But they did not tie in the doorbell, the driveway sensor, the lighting, the shades, etc. It was easier to put Elan in there than try and make the C4 work. A major reason was that C4 does not have a RS232 driver for old Homeworks Interactive (WTF?) and the cost to upgrade to a QS processor was more than the Elan hardware. Of course, I have eaten up any difference in the programming time vs. what I would be into it with C4, but it was not my call, and I got a free HC800 out of it. So I will take the dead mouse to the head for that.

In NC if the car is 35 years old, there is no inspection at all.
If the car is a 1994 or older, it only requires a "safety" inspection (lights and horn).
In my search for a car in the Vancouver, Canada area, I found out that any car 25 years old can be imported to the US if you have a title and $125.00.
In Seattle the tags go with the car, and in NC, you pay a $150.00 or so fine if you don't turn in the tags when you sell, or if you don't renew within a specific amount of time.
In NC, if you get a car from out of state, you have to have the state police do a theft search before they will issue a title.
It's amazing how different the laws are on something so basic as tags and titles for cars, and how much of a PIA it can be.
Annual tag renewal, taxes and fees are higher than the annual "stated value" insurance from Haggerty on my 69 Vette.

When I registered my car, I was told by the DMV that they no longer issue titles on cars of that age. After over 3 hours of waiting, I didn't question it as I wanted to get the hell out of there. I have to call and talk to someone about that. I don't see how that can be true. I don't feel great about having a car now with no title. I can imagine how difficult that will be to sell if and when I do.

Last time I checked, the only way to have the emissions testing waived was to apply for historical vehicle tags. I think the car only had to be 25 years old, so mine qualified, but it also stated that use had to be limited to car shows, parades, etc.
I haven't driven my car much for several years now so it stays in a state of tune where it passed CA smog fairly easily, but replacement parts for things like the mechanical fuel injection are becoming difficult to find and very expensive so repairs & maintenance are getting costly.
Valuations for my car have been insane for the last couple years, but looks like pricing is starting to plateau or even reverse a little now.

Not sure what year, but he found out the hard way that his is very rare model. Has some unique features that required a bank account to repair. Valuations for my car have been insane for the last couple years, but looks like pricing is starting to plateau or even reverse a little now. Hell, even the lowly 914 had climbed to crazy levels. As an aside, I watched the Mecum Houston and was shocked at how low the bids and sales numbers were. A "REALLY" nice Rolls went for all of $1,500.00.

High density areas like Charlotte, Raleigh, and I assume your area has to do it. We don't, and I don't think my in-laws in Burlington have to do it.

That reminds me. When I registered my car, I was told by the DMV that they no longer issue titles on cars of that age. That's very common in several states. CT, GA, VT, NH, ME, RI and Al are some that I know of. Only need a bill of sale and current registration form from what I've been told. Then you go through the hassle of getting a "Theft Bureau" inspection and a title if your state requires on, or a new registration if your state doesn't. Lots of wrong info on the net about some of this car stuff. I read that in CT a title on old cars is optional, even though it's not required. But, that may not be correct, since it is internet info....

The problem with optional is trying to get some government employee to figure out how to do it, then actually do it if you want it.
