Hi,

I am considering adding a MSC-400 to my setup.

One of the reasons I was considering the MSC-400 was for the RS-232 control offered by the MSC. I was under the impression that I would be able to use the MSC-400 for all commands that would need to be sent to my receiver.

However, I have been playing around in CCP to determine how I would configure my remotes. It doesn't appear that there is a way to directly map an entire device to a remote that is to be controlled through the MSC. Is this correct or is there a way that I am missing.

In other words, if I wanted to control the device by IR/RF, I could go to Program, create names and devices, add some pages, and save all the IR commands to the pages and CCP automatically maps the commands to buttons.

Is there a way to do the same thing only have CCP map the serial commands to all of those buttons or is the only way to create Smart Macros and manually map all the buttons?

Yes, you have to manually drop in the triggers for serial.

That doesn't sound very fun :-(.

Can the serial commands be directly assigned to a button or does a smart macro need to be created first and then the macro assigned to the button?

Also, one of the reasons I would like to serial control is that i have had some problems locating the IR receiver on my Denon AVR-4306, so the IR emitter hasn't performed as well as I would like. Can someone point me to the location where I should be attaching the IR emitter to for the best performance?

Just right click of the device got to "Tools" and click "Convert to Smart Macro Group" this will create smart macros for every function automatically.

Then you just drag and drop them into your device. It will automatically name the soft buttons as you drag them over. It only takes like 5 minutes to do the whole device. It is not as hard as it seems.

If you shine a flashlight on the denon you should be able to see where the ir port is pretty easily. If you are getting poor performance try turning down the IR output a little.

I find a flashlight is your best friend for finding the IR sensors. Look for the little round purplish hole behind the display glass (mine is on the left - I don't know where the 4306's is). It's actually probably a red lens (to filter out other light), but it looks kind of purple to me through the front glass.

Darn - a little to slow :-)

You could use the direct IR input on your 4306 instead of the IR receiver. The port is right under the RS-232 port.

Thanks for all of the replies.

The flashlight trick was a major help, reliability of the IR emitter on the Denon has been at 100% over the past day or 2 since I adjusted the emitter position.

This will probably cause me to forgo the use of the RS-232 port for control of this device.
