That doesn't sound very fun :-(.

Can the serial commands be directly assigned to a button or does a smart macro need to be created first and then the macro assigned to the button?

Just right click of the device got to "Tools" and click "Convert to Smart Macro Group" this will create smart macros for every function automatically.

Then you just drag and drop them into your device. It will automatically name the soft buttons as you drag them over. It only takes like 5 minutes to do the whole device. It is not as hard as it seems.

Also, one of the reasons I would like to serial control is that i have had some problems locating the IR receiver on my Denon AVR-4306, so the IR emitter hasn't performed as well as I would like. Can someone point me to the location where I should be attaching the IR emitter to for the best performance?

If you shine a flashlight on the denon you should be able to see where the ir port is pretty easily. If you are getting poor performance try turning down the IR output a little.
