URC is not in the business of selling lighting, they are in the business of selling remote control solutions. They use the lighting as a vehicle to sell the remotes, not the only way again. In fact, they could be losing money on every switch they sell just to make the remotes more attractive. So I doubt they want to advertise, condone or endorse the use of the switches with other remotes. We don't know what URC's percentage of profit per switch is nor do we know what it cost them in time, research, marketing, mass-production and planning to sell these switches but I venture to say that they are not relying on the sale of switches to be in the black.
This is simply a sweetener and feature of their remotes, not the other way around.

Easy, they, like many other companies, would rather cut off their own nose to spite their face. Not seeing the potential to sell more dimmers (or iPod docks). They think that they will sway people to buy/sell URC over RTI and others because they are the only ones to offer these options... little do they realize, that most of us would spend the next "2weeks" to 2 years to find a work around rather than sell URC remotes.
