Sorry to offend smokinghot, I did not realized the thread
was not about the software. I mean you can understand
my confusion with the thread title is
"Software for my MX-980" and for the last 6 pages of post
there has been a large majority debating and begging (me
included).

You're not offending me. It's just that URC software policy has been beaten to death already on RC, and it got the point where the creator (Daniel Tonks) created his own policy on the discussion. Where in, the topic of conversation was officially of limits. I'm actually surprised this one has gone on this long.

Well is that any different then a mgr selling their goods
to a wholeseller who then sells to a dealer/retailer,
who then sells them to the end-user. Most companies do
not sell their goods to the end-user directly. Now I
would agree if it was truely a dealer only item and was
only used in the store and could not be sold to the public.

It is different, and your last sentence above hammers down the point that some don't seem to understand. The product is for the professional integrator to sell and configure. It is dealer only. URC has given the dealer the right to keep the software in house, if they choose to. There are two separate lines "comsumer" and "professional".

And your right it is up to the dealer,
however that policy varies btw dealers and even with CI's
within the same dealer. URC could make the whole experience
easier if it chose to - it could make dealers give a copy
of the software to each user, include it the box, or it
could supply it with registration (like it is doing for
the older remotes but with updates). There has to be
a way better then what URC is doing (or supporting!) then
what it is happening today...

I think the best way would be for URC to stamp in bold across the top of the packaging:

SOFTWARE NOT INCLUDED... ASK YOUR DEALER FOR AVAILABILITY
