Hi, Troy. Not sure whether you have posted anywhere else
on your findings (I couldn't find anything through a search),
but were you able to clarify this issue as a result of
your tests?

I must say, it would be a major bummer if I did not have
most controls for Zone 2 where Zone 1 is off. I run my
Zone 2 to speakers in a separate living room, to run CD
/ tuner / iPod, and often would find that I want to operate
Zone 2 without having Zone 1 on as well.

Some functions such as transport control and presets for the iPod, network and tuner sources are not available unless zone 1 is on for the 06 and 07 models. Unfortunately, at this point, I don't exactly recall my tests on the 2307 and 2807 because I ended up not implementing many of them. I sold many 3806 models until the release of the 08 models because it was such a rock solid piece. I gave the engineers and reps an earfull about this at Cedia '06. I don't know if anyone listened or not but they have resolved this issue on the 08's.

A related question - is it possible to have the tuner
operating for both Zone 1 and Zone 2, but to have different
stations or presets running for each? Or put another
way - are the presets operated specifically for each zone,
or instead if you are running the same tuner source for
each zone, then you can only have the same station?

There is only one AM-FM tuner thus preset commands from either zone will change it on both. The 4308 does have 3 tuners (AM-FM, XM and HD) so you can listen to these independently.
