One claim is based on science and reason and observation.

The other claim is from a work of fiction written thousands
of years ago by people who "knew" that the earth was flat.

davidcasemore that was the most ridiculous post I think you have ever made. Based on science the flat earth was based on the science of the day. Being based on the science of the day means often means nothing. People 100 years from now will laugh at some of the prevailing thoughts by the scientists - i.e. man made global warming. You act as if all branches of science is are absolutes. They aren't. What were concerned cutting edge ideas 20 years ago have been replaced by others. If there were ever a place where the term evolution is applicable it's to the sciences. Science stops being science when it does not adapt to new evidence regardless of what that does to their beliefs. When the Big Bang theory came out and they found that sooner or later it will all come crashing back on itself. That it will be destroyed in a cataclysmic event that can be only be matched with the start of the Big Bang. Many scientist of the day suddenly camr to the gross realization that what the Bible has said all along is going to happen because up to that point they thought that it would expand forever. Many could not accept that the Bible was correct therefore the collapse was not possible.
