I just bought a, insignia flatscreen (NS-20CLTV)...clearance,
on display from bestbuy, so I didn't get the original
remote, they gave me some rca universal remote. I have
gone through so many codes my head is spinning and nothing
has worked. I can't do the "learning" thing because I
don't have the original remote. I don't know what to do,
I can't turn it on/off, or anything. I don't want it for
directv or anything, I just want it for tv/dvd use like
volume, channel, input, on/off. Why is this so complicated?
Please help.

Sorry but you're out of luck. The reason they say use the learning mode because there isn't a code for that model in any universal or oem remote.

Get a learning remote, go back to the store with extra batteries and use their remote to teach yours.

Or buy a new oem remote, its pretty cheap here:
