If the person whose phone is notified is not present, the doorbell is worthless. The GC came up with a solution for that: he got an Alexa device (I think) and put it near the front door. When someone hits the Nest button, this thing announces that there's someone at the front door. Whew. What a lot to go through.
It wouldn't be a lot to go through if the homeowner had understood why the doorbell is needed and if you had accepted the original design. They didn't design it for one-offs, they designed it to work in the majority of houses. Then, you let the GC solve the problem.
