I have a project where the client is driving me nuts with every decision. She keeps changing her mind on things she already approved, saying she never approved it. Most issues are about how things will look, especially when people enter the house. Then today she sent me a link to the nest doorbell and said “this has good reviews online”. She likes it because she thinks it will fit on the molding around the door (the front door goes corner to corner of an entrance area)

I a know a kitchen remodel contractor who deals with lots of “princesses”, he has them sign off on every decision. (There are tons of change orders)

Writing. As in "Get it in."

A client's GC chose one of these for a client and I got to install it.

It went over a somewhat jacked-up single gangish size hole cut into a large thick piece of wood that's part of the fanciness surrounding the front door. Be ready to use custom woodworking skills if that's your situation.

It takes a bit of time after ringing for the unit to respond. Sometimes impatient delivery people are shown leaving when you get to the image.

It connects to an existing doorbell. This client's doorbell was removed when a Panasonic phone system was installed there a dozen years ago by a previous owner.

The Nest people COULD NOT, WOULD NOT tell me anything about how to connect it without a working doorbell in place. Basically they are drones who don't understand the electronics involved. So I had to put in a doorbell. Thank God a pair of wires was in place!

Since the doorbell was only to provide the electronics required for the Nest doorbell installation, I left it in the basement and nobody could hear the actual doorbell. Client didn't want to pay for me to run wires upstairs so the doorbell could be upstairs. This led to...

If the person whose phone is notified is not present, the doorbell is worthless. The GC came up with a solution for that: he got an Alexa device (I think) and put it near the front door. When someone hits the Nest button, this thing announces that there's someone at the front door. Whew. What a lot to go through.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I have the Nest doorbell.  I like it much better than the Ring doorbells...Main difference is that the Nest MUST be hardwired and it's $5 per month.

I like the style of it much better than Ring (for outside). And since I have a Nest thermostat, it's one app.

Other than that, they're essentially the same thing.

I'm partial to Apple which makes me partial to Nest. (although Google actually owns them now).

Hasbeen, what do you get for your five bucks a month? My client doesn't have it, whatever it is. You can bet this will matter to Fins' client.

Why are you paying $5/month?

Yep. It’s a $5million house, and they decided to add lighting protection after Sheetrock went up on the second floor, but they can’t afford $5 a month.

The monthly charge is probably all I need to kill the nest idea

I think the nest is the best looking out of them all. I’ve been looking into smart doorbells and I just can’t decide between the nest and the ring elite. The ring elite just seems too big though next to my door. But I like the integration options via C4 and Blackwire.

Nest is better looking and it will take a few extra steps to integrate it, but the RMFs are steeper....

The problem with the ring elite is that it needs to be recessed...But otherwise, it looks nice...

If you remember a few months ago, I brought up a thread about trying to fit one in an old Nutone box at my mom's house. It ended up working really nicely and I was impressed with everything about the Ring Elite...it's on a whole different level from the other pieces of garbage they make...I'll see if I can find a pic.

Nope.  Can't find a pic...since the Nutone doorbell was bigger than the Ring..I used the plate from the Nutone cut out the middle of it and installed the Ring.  Worked out perfectly....almost looked like I knew what I was doing.

But it also needs to be wired.....with a Cat5, it works on POE.

For $5 the nest records 24/7 for 5 days. The Ring just does motion video clips I think - but last I checked it stores like 60 days worth of clips.

I have a Nest and really like it. It looks really nice.

Concerning additional DIY stuff with no margin, I saw Arlo now is coming out with a doorbell.

What’s the integration? My understanding is it’s very limited because ring doesn’t use a standard video format

Every one of these DIY-type things (as seen in CEPro!) seem like someone could just walk up to it, yank it off the wall, and install it at their own house! And if you live in a neighborhood where nobody would ever do that then you probably can get by with a plain old doorbell.

As "Custom" Integrators aren't we supposed to be installing Siedle, HaloVision, C4, Panasonic, Elan etc?

And if a client is willing to shell out $5 (or much more) per month then that RMR should be going into your business.

And Doorbird, they're pretty cool too.

Well, this house is in that neighborhood. The odds of actually needing surveillance is pretty low. It’s more likely to be used when one of their drunk friends falls after a party and tries to sue.

Yes we are. And i actually plan to install the Elan doorbell. But I needed some information to tell her why she can’t just use the plastic turd stuck on the door frame.
