Don't rely on the middle dot too much to determine the middle of the stud. The sensor spacing is such that you need to find both of the outer limits of when the LEDs change from one group of three to another.
I noted earlier that the unit needed AC scan, I guess you found out why. My DMM is the Fluke Electricians model
