New CHAD touchscreen remote
Onkyo debuted their new touchscreen remote control, based on the Philips Pronto base design. The CHAD (Custom Home Automation Device) USR-5RF features 2 megabytes of memory, a 320x240 4-color backlit LCD display and built-in RF transmitter for use with an optional RF receiver. Also sold optionally is a recharging dock with NiMH battery pack. The remote features everything good about the Pronto - built-in RF database, unlimited number of macros, custom bitmaps and a PC connection. Free "USR-5 Editor" software will be downloadable from Onkyo's website.

Although the CHAD includes the same number of hard buttons as the Pronto, Onkyo has gone a different route with the physical design, employing an intriguing combination of curves and angles to create a very modern looking remote. Further, Onkyo has customized the remote's graphical user interface with a new look.

Although Onkyo's website initially indicated that the CHAD would be included with Onkyo's TS-DS898 receiver, it's now clear that this will instead be sold as an accessory item. I hope to post more on the USR-5RF as it becomes available.
