Strengths:Nice layout, just enough keys and codes to support all 8 devices, 8 key macros and timers is just more than any other remote can offer
Weaknesses:Hard on programming. Not all devices pre-programmed. Learning sometimes freezes device permanently ...
Review:I bought the device in Germany and after coming back to Poland and trying for 4 hours to programme it I was really disapointed. It just couldn't learn the basic functions of my amplituner (Technics AX7)-like switching sources.
The very next day I read reviews in Remotecentral and I couldn't believe my eyes. The reviews were so contradictory.
Some were giving it one star others all five. And you know what .... I came back home and .....I did it !!!! The 880 suddenly started to work fine. I found that a key to success is just a short pressing of the buttons on the original remote while programming and that's it !! I managed to program ALL keys I wanted even including some device-specific codes from VCR. Great !!!

RF also works and is just cool !

HW list

Technics AX7 amplituner
Panasonic 32PB50 TV
Panasonic VCR
Sharp vcr
Philips SAT receiver
Technics PG7 CD

Strengths:- very good button layout
- nice backlighting
- good ergonomic
Weaknesses:- very unstable on programming
- sometimes flickering backlight
- can not learn all codes
Review:- very good button layout
One of the best layouts i have seen on a remote, it's very easy to use if everything is programmed
- nice backlighting
cool color and very bright :-), but it's flickering sometimes and makes some noise ;-(
- good ergonomic
it's very good to use all functions with one hand and the weight is very good balanced
- very unstable on programming, can not learn all codes
i wondered, that i can't learn my Siemens Instabus Light control system directly into this remote, but it can learn the codes from my other (very cheap and old) learnable remote control wich was programmed with the same original remote ???
During the programming of other remotes the RU880 freezes often, that makes me very angry, thats very bad, philips !

Strengths:Can handle all my units. I haven't had any problems with this remote at all. I use it for my TV,amp, dvd and I even use its RF capabilities to turn and fade my lamps around the flat.
Weaknesses:Can't figure anything out..
Review:As I said before. This unit handles all my units with ease. No problems what so ever. On the Philips webiste it's possible to download ProntoEdit under the ru880's drivers page. I wonder if I can use it to program my remote. That would be interesting to know. I'm trying to figure this out as I type. I'll post if I find something interesting out. Anyone else who knows anything about this?

Review 21 made on Saturday February 9, 2002 at 7:58 PM.
Strengths:Strong feel and pleasing looks. Buttons well laid out.Nice backlight.
Weaknesses:Very frustrating when for no apparent reason the thing locks up. Just when you think it's all done you find it's lost a couple of devices. Unreliable to say the least.
Review:First one would not program at all. Replacement has problem with Home button. The Home button is programmed for 2nd VCR but what ever device is last used ie TV, Cd etc gets turned on/off by using the home button yet on initial setup it's fine.Spent all day trying to find a way around this but it looks like it's back to the store.

Review 20 made on Thursday January 31, 2002 at 4:37 AM.
Strengths:Well designed and layed out keypad.
Weaknesses:Poor firmware, crashes a *lot* during programming.
Review:It crashed numerous times during learning. The remote that caused the most crashes was another Philips controller!
Each time it crashes it is necessary to momentarily disconnect the batteries. Although no data was lost, it did reset the clock back to 12:00 and set the language to German.
When I tried to use the timer to activate my dvd player, I found that the timer is basically a "crash-me-and-wipe-ALL-data-at-this-time" function!

However, once programmed - as long as you don't use the timer - it performs perfectly well.

Review 19 made on Friday January 4, 2002 at 4:38 PM.
Strengths:Design and weight. Looks nice and modern.
Works well with Panasonic D5-W32.
Weaknesses:Problem to learn each buttom. Freezes
when you whant to learn more = you have
to take out batteries and put them back
but then ALL YOUR WORK IS LOST !
Review:This remote is not good. I have returned it back to the store.

Review 18 made on Friday January 4, 2002 at 3:48 AM.
Strengths:It replaces all my remotes, nice display.
Weaknesses:The manual doesn't give you all the codes.
Review:Works great, it had some problems recognizing my Philips SAT receiver, but by using the LEARN option, I got it working. It also controls all the options of my NAD AV 716 pro-logic receiver and my old NAD CD player.
