I have an old (circa 1996) Onkyo receiver TX-SV424 and a newish Samsung TV LN46B750. The Onkyo remote no longer works. Should I be worried that the current universal remotes will not work with the old Onkyo or will they all work? I am considering one of URC WR7, Sony VL600, VL610 or VLZ620 (when it is available for sale).
If you were to decide between the Sony and URC, considering that they cost about the same, which one would you choose?
The Pronto file section here has a CCF file from about 2000 which contains the IR signals for Onkyo TX VS373 and TX DS474. These two units both use the identical signals. Most of the signals are NEC1 device 210.109 with a few 108 subdevices.
These signals look the same as modern Onkyo units, so I believe that most universals that have Onkyo codes will be able to control your receiver. Newer Onkyos have more signals defined, and some of those are for subdevices 2, 172, and 176. But the basic functions are the same.
In case you haven't already decided on the pool of possibilities, may I suggest the RCA RCRP05B? The advantage of that remote (and its cousins made by Universal Electronics) is that you can program each button individually. This is a big win when you can't learn the codes, because for example you don't have the original remote, or you want to take advantage of discrete codes (like power or input selection) that aren't in the original remote. The OneForAll URC-8820N and 10820N have the same capability.
