I've had my T2+ for many years and it's performed like a champ through it all. The only maintenance I've had to do during this time is change the battery every 3+ years. Last week however, I noticed that the remote did not seem to be charging well and the blue LED would either stay on only for a couple minutes (even on a low battery) or not come on at all. Thinking that perhaps a new battery was in order, I ordered and installed one this week but noticed that the blue LED isn't even coming on at all now. This new battery came freshly charged and will probably last a few days but I'm concerned that if my charger isn't working properly, this won't be a good situation for long. I've tried cleaning the terminals on both remote & charger but nothing seems to help. Also verified w. a voltmeter that the DC adapter for the base is working and putting out the correct voltage. Blue LED just does not come on anymore!

Has anyone encountered this before and if so, what are my options? How do I determine if this is a problem w. the base and not something else? The T2+ itself seems to be working great so don't want to change it if at all possible.

Thanks in advance for any advice. My first post on this forum :-)

From what you have described, it sounds like the problem is with the remote, not the charger. First though, I would try to get my hands on another charger and try using it. You can still get the old chargers. If that doesn't work, you can send the remote in to get serviced. Howevr, if they need to replace the board on it or swap it out for a new one, they will not transfer over the programming. So make sure your dealer has a copy of the file before sending in.

Try cleaning the contacts on both the remote and the charger. Just scratch the metal plates with a sharp object. maybe they have oxidized.

Thanks for the suggestions so far...

Just curious, may I ask why you think the problem might be in the remote as opposed to the charger? BTW, I assume this is understood but the "blue LED" which isn't coming on is the light on the charger base for the T2+ :-)

I agree with the suggestion to try another charger base. However the dealer that sold me the remote is no longer in business! I'm open to recommendations for a good RTI dealer in the San Diego area...

Could be wear in the charger base springs not maintaining contact.

Could be electronic circuitry degradation in the remote, charger base or transformer due to power transients, static shock, etc... if voltage is in range it could be an issue of available amps... however, a change in resistance would effect the balance of all electrical properties.

Try roughing up the contacts as mentioned by the prior poster. I find that cleaning the contacts eliminates at least 50% of my remote control and battery failures. Once I discovered this, I started informing my clients to clean the contacts and I saw a measurable drop in RTI service calls! Not sure what you cleaned them with but try denatured alcohol (unplug the base first!) and perhaps a bit of 400 grit sand paper on a small tool of your invention.

have you confirmed it actually isn't charging?....not that it happens all the time but the led could have gone.....anyhome is suggesting the remote because the remote has to complete the circuit for charging to occur....if part of the charging board is bad the base won't register a remote docked= no charging

I tried sandpapering and cleaning contacts on both charger and remote again as suggested but to no avail.

Regarding the blue LED going bad, I don't think it has since I see it flash on briefly each time I plug the base back into the transformer. It's hard to tell if the remote is charging in spite of no LED light because it's a relatively new battery in there so it'll probably be a few more days before the low batt. indicator comes on. I guess if it never comes on then that would be good but I suspect it's wishful thinking.

Sigh... Might be time to look for a new RTI dealer in San Diego. Thanks again for the suggestions!

RTI is not the quickest but they are usually VERY reasonable when servicing their product. I have often had my out of warranty issues covered completely (minus shipping to) if they feel it is a native or known issue. if not, the repair fees have been reasonable.

2nd that. It might be worth giving them a call.

I used to install RTI in peoples homes. SO I ended up getting 2 of RTI's T1 remotes for the house.

At the company I used to work for, we experienced this alot. What we tried to do was create little cardboard props for the remote to sit on while it was sitting in the charger.

This morning my charger started to act defective on me. So I simply cut a small narrow piece of cardboard and folded it over to make it about two layers of cardboard and I cut it into 3 pieces. I put one of the pieces of cardboard just between the metal contacts in the charger and two behind them near in the back (or just behind) the metal contacts.

With a little trial and error, my remote is charging now. Seems kind of screwy, but it works.

It's too bad that RTI developed a remote charging system that wears out after two years. I guess the springs in the metal charging contacts (inside the base) wore out.

Give it a try. If it works for just a little bit then the charging light goes off, try to reposition the cardboard.

I was going to come up with a ductape solution just to be funny, but cardboard seems to do the trick for me

ok, so I emailed RTI, they replied quickly and recommended that I call their tech support line.

I called their customer service, the rep I spoke with on the phone was totally unhelpful and actually told me buy a new $50 charger when the reality of it is that the part probably costs them around $10 to make. If they wanted to prevent me from posting negative feedback on AV forums/reviews they would have simply sent the part to me. They have created a MONSTER!

I told them that I was VERY unsatisfied. And that I would post on any AV message forum that I come across to not purchase RTI products and to try Logitech, control4, universal etc. I asked to speak with his supervisor and the customer service rep told me that his supervisor had heard the complaint before. He said that I have two options 1) buy a new charger 2) send in my charger for a repair estimate. (WHAT A JOKE)

My advice is to not purchase RTI and look elsewhere, unless you want to deal with terrible customer service (because all they offer is a 90 day warranty) or having to jerry rig your remotes charging base.

Ha, get in line with all the people tired of RTI and their crap falling apart... Try signing up for their forum and have some fun while you are at it, they love to delete honest posts.

How old are the T1s? RTI has a 1 year warranty on parts and 90 days on batteries. Have you ever tried to manufacture something, $10.00 is probably right after the design, molds, engineering, machining, testing, approvals, manufacturing and packaging fees.

I'm sure you are the same guy the bitches about your food at a resturant or complains about your room at a hotel. Good luck with life!
