Do I really need to wait 12 hours to charge the T2 NiMH batteries?

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone can comment on if a full 12 hours is really required before using the rechargable NiMH batteries that T2 ships with? I know that NiCAD batteries have memory issues and really need the full initial charge. I was under the impression that NiMH batteries did not have this issue and that was NiMH's primary advantange.

I am asking for two reasons. I don't really want to wait till tomorrow before I start experimenting with the remote. :) I would love to get away with charging them for only 6 hours the initial time so I can play with the remote some tonight.

I am also wondering because I started them charging at work and if the full 12 hours is really required, I will either have to leave it here overnight or bring it home to complete the 12 hour charge. I am wondering how starting and stopping the charge procedure affects things, if at all. If anyone has any info that would be great!

Thanks!

Will the ever impatient remote user

Hehe, I forgot to remove the sticker on the memory pack that pervents it from being charged. That pretty much takes care of my dilema because I will just wait till I get home to start the initial charge. I am still curious what the story is on the initial charging period and why it is needed.

Thanks,

Will

I assume it's used to ensure the battery is 100% charged... I'm not sure what would happen if you don't let it finish; perhaps a few percent won't be usable?

For what it's worth, my information sources (back of brain in spider web covered dark area), tells me that NiMH batteries don't have the memory effect to the same extent as NiCAD (obviously, no where near), but do have the effect over the long term. So, again, my information sources tell me that charging your battery to full charge at the beginning gives you the full potential of the battery in the long term. But.....

.....that's just my 2-cents! - Greg :-)

Greg -- Yeah, anyone that tells you NiMH has *no* memory hasn't used a NiMH laptop or cell phone for very long. Now, Lithium Ion on the other hand...

This is all history by now, but when I got my remote I charged one battery for an hour, swapped and downloaded my configuration amd played for a bit, then let it charge I think three hours, swapped again ... you get the picture.

Will, you are not the only impatient dude around :-). So, how DO you like it? Or are you too busy pressing buttons to answer?

Cheers,

DJ

I have been busy the past few days, but I have to say that I really love the remote. It is working great and handles my system without breaking a sweat. I am particularly happy with how it handles my TiVo, it is handles that much better than my Pronto did.

I will be doing the same thing as you guys when I get my T2 on Friday. However, if the T2 battery works like my cell phone re-charger battery, don't you have to charge it for the full 12 hours for the initial charge?
I thought that if you don't let your battery fully charge initially (i.e. full 12 hours), the battery life will not last as long. Can anyone confirm?

Greg :-)

Just being sarcy!!! ;-)

Yep, as stated above, you'll want to charge it for the FULL 12 hours!
