Hello everyone,

I am wondering if anybody have encountered this problem:

In my 555ES, i hooked up the SVHS and RCA Video out to my Sony television's Video 1.

I have a SVHS coming from the DISH to the receiver and regular RCAs coming from the VCR.

From the remote, if i select the DISH, everything turns on, the dish, the tv, the 555es, and the tv changes it mode to Video 1.

if i select the vcr, i only get sound and no video. I know i am not connecting something correctly.

May someone please help?.

I have:
Sony 36" WEGA TV
Sony DA555ES
Sony SAT-A4
Sony SLV799HF

THanks in advance!

Hey Nancy,

Ya can't have both S-vid and RCA (composite) vid going to the same input. S-vid takes precedence over the composite.

So, either move the composite to Video 2 or convert the composite to S-vid so use may use just one input.

Paul's right -- you can only use composite OR S-Video on a single input, not both.

Thanks a lot!

hrm...but if I don't turn on the Dish (S-Vid), then will the VCR's composite work?.... Right now I have the Dish (S-vid) to VIDEO 1 on the TV and the VCR (composite) to VIDEO 2 on the TV. On the remote that came with my 555ES, everytime i select the VCR, the Video setting on the TV stays on VIDEO 1. I have to manually change the setting to VIDEO 2. Is there anyway around this?...

Can you also tell me more about the converter?... the composite to S-Vid.. how much does it cost?.. and which one is a good quality one?..

Thanks again!

Nancy,

1) Does your VCR have an S-Video output? If so, then I think you can solve your problem.

2) Although this might not be most desirable, you can hookup your DSS/SAT output using composite instead of S-Video.

3) You can get around your TV's video input selection problem by purchasing a universal remote with macro capabilities. A suggestion would be the Radio Shack model #15-1994 or the One For All Cinema 7 IQ (Model #URC-7800). Right now I have setup my 15-1994 to power on all devices (TV, Receiver, VCR and DSS) as well as selecting video input #1 by depressing on only one key!

Let me know how it goes!

Nancy,

Check out this S-Video switcher from Sima:

[Link: simacorp.com]

It will even convert composite to S-Video. I think it's about $139.00. I do not own one, but have seen favorable responses in the forum.

Hey you Sony people,

Does Sony still use that S-link or S-control system that allows the Sony components to sense each other. Wouldn't that allow Nancy's Wega to auto switch to the active input when she changes sources?

I've been looking at the pronto remote, but would like to try to use the one that came with the 555ES for a little while... this current system was pretty expensive already. The cheapest pronto i've seen so far is approx. 300.00.

Greg, i agree, ppl say that i should go with the S-Video if at all possible. My VCR does not have the S-Video output.

cooltoff, the 555ES does not have s-link. I think it has something like a A1 link?... i will get back to you. I need to look in the back of the machine.

This is my first time doing this and it was easy to connect everything before i bought the receiver. But once the receiver came... i'm sort of confused. Does any1 know of a place in the web that gives the correct wiring procedures for my current setup?

Thanks again everyone!

I'm not certain about newer sets, but I know my old Hitachi had a microswitch that sensed when a cable was plugged into the S-Video input -- and used it -- even if it wasn't connected to anything on the other end. I suspect newer equipment still does something similar to this.

I have to first apologize because I'm out of town at the moment and am trying to remember this stuff.

The "S-link",or whatever it's called, would be a wired control connection between your VCR and your TV. My 41" rp Sony mentions this "link" in the manual in the hook-up section in the beginning. Unfortunately my Sony VCR didn't come similarly equipted. Perhaps you are better equipted.

I'm pretty sure that the 555 has no S-Link in/out. Daniel is correct that the S-Video plug, when inserted into the Wega, physically disables the Composite(RCA) video input, even if nothing is connected to the other end of the S-video cable. The easiest way to get around this is to use Composite(RCA) video for everything-forget about the S-video. I know that kind of stinks, but it does make the system easiest to use using the Sony touchscreen remote. Compare the S-video signal of the Sat with it's Composite(RCA)--I think you'll find that the difference (if you can see any at all) is worth being able to use your touchscreen remote much more easily.
Here's how I usually connect this system:
(All connections are Left, Right, and Composite(RCA) video, except the 555's MONITOR OUT, which is only Video):

The jacks on the TV labled "TV OUT" go to 555 "VIDEO 1 IN". (For watching Cable TV that's connected to either of the TV's antenna inputs.) "MONITOR OUT" on the TV can also be used instead, but I like using "TV OUT", especially with a Cable Box, where the TV would be set on Channel 3.

The A4 Satellite receiver's Left, Right, Video, and Optical out go to the 555 "TV/SAT IN". The Optical cable goes to 555 "TV/SAT OPTICAL IN".
The Satellite's second set of Left, Right, and Video go to the VCR's "LINE IN" jacks (for automatic Satellite recording). The IR blaster plugs into the back of the A4 and gets placed in front of the VCR's IR window.

The VCR's Left, Right, and Video out go to the 555 "VIDEO 2 IN".

The 555's "MONITOR OUT"(RCA only) to the Wega's "VIDEO 1" input (RCA Video only, no Audio)

On the 555, re-label the inputs:(without quotes)
VIDEO 1 re-label to "CABLE TV"
VIDEO 2 re-label to "VCR"
TV/SAT re-label to "SATELITE" (Not enough room for 2 "L"'s in "SATELLITE"
Use the Download function of the touchscreen to download your new names so they appear on the touchscreen.
On the touchscreen, assign the inputs (assign IR, I think?) to the devices they will control(SAT is a Sony SAT, CABLE TV is a Sony TV, VCR is a Sony VTR3, etc.)
Also, use the touchscreen's "FUNCTION HOOK UP" (I think that's what they call it) to "tell" it what components you actually have connected. This way, only the ones you actually have will appear on the touchscreen.
Also, on the touchscreen, set the AUTO FUNCTION to ON. You have to do this each time you replace the batteries too. Set the STANDBY to ALL OFF.

Remember to go into the A4's menu, choose "AUDIO" and make sure that "DOLBY DIGITAL" is set to "ON". Out of the box, it's not.

After all is done:

Pressing "CABLE TV" on the touchscreen will turn the 555 and Wega on, and put the Wega to it's Antenna input. You'll see the Cable TV picture and the sound will be sent to the 555 via the TV OUT jacks on the back of the TV.

Pressing "SATELITE" or "VCR" on the touchscreen will turn the 555 and Wega on, and put the Wega to it's "VIDEO 1" input. In this case, the Satellite and/or VCR signals are sent through the 555 and into the Wega's Video 1 input.

Go to channel 800 and make sure that the 555 is "seeing" the Dolby Digital signal. (Blue light on 555 should come on.)

The touchscreen always makes the TV go to Video 1 unless you have told the touchscreen that you are controlling a Sony TV, as in "CABLE TV".

Keep in mind that the Wega may not change from Antenna to INPUT 1 when it is first turned on. Just re-select your source from the touchscreen if anything gets out of synch.

Sorry for the long post, but I thought it might help. I don't mean to offend anyone by simplifying things too much, but it always helps to have more, than less, info, I think!
