Help!

...I recently added a Sony DVD S530 to my HT. I use a Denon AVR2400. My AVR2400 has inputs for "6 Channel Inputs" while the DVD has "5.1 channel output". The AVR2400 doesn't have an internal decoder.

In addition, there are inputs on the AVR2400 for DAT/TAPE but no coax or optical input.

I have the 5.1 outs from the DVD going to 6 channel ins on the recv'r and the Line out on the DVD to the switchable DVD inputs on the REcv'r.

Here's the concern. When I set the recv'r to 6 channel input to view/listen to the dvd, the sub signal drops out. It is fine in all other surround modes except the 6 channel input.

Is this the proper connection? Should I be able to play a DTS recording such as the Eagles-When hell freezes...?

Thanks in advance!

Morning Mike,

Sounds like you need to configure the "Bass Management" in the player. Daniel will probably have more specific help, since he has a similar situation.

In your set-up, however, unless your player has DTS decoding as well, you'll need an outboard decoder. The Technics SH AC500D would be a good inexpensive choice.

Thanks for the response and happy holidays!

I searched for something specific to bass management but must be overlooking it. If you, or anyone else has specific instructions it would be greatly appreciated.

My DVD does accomodate DTS decoding. When I select the DTS Audio signal on, say the Eagles DVD, there is no audio signal.

Not sure what the deal is there...

Hi again,

Did some checking on your player. It doesn't decode DTS, it just outputs the signal. The on board decoder is only for Dolby Digital.

The Bass Management should be under Dolby Digital Set-up controls.

Good luck and Happy new Year

Once more with feeling.

Sometimes I overexplain, in which case to compensate I go the other way as well.

The DD set-up is probably very similar to the set-up you did for Pro Logic. Whether the speakers are full range or not,is there a sub in the system and so on.

Hope I've helped a little until someone with your player rings in.

Thanks again for the response.

Let me understand...The dvd I have will output the DTS signal but it would be up the recv'r to convert it...hence no signal at all when I select DTS. I can live with that for now (no choice)..

The sub issue is more important. In the setup I have indicated that there is a sub. For the most part I have chosen all normal settings for the speakers (NHT's all around). Still the base response is poor at best. I did notice in the THX wrap at the beginning of the Eagles dvd the base was there just way low. I don't want to have to turn up the output on the base amp every time I switch to DD.

Last thoughts,

are 5.1 and 6 channel synonamous? The DVD has "5.1 out" and the recv'r has "6 channel in".

Should I be using the Digital jacks for the DAT on my recv'r in addition to the 5.1 and analog jacks? If yes do I need to pigtail them or convert from coax to RCA (there are L&R jacks on the recv'r)??

Thanks in advance!

Hey Mark,

Paragraph 1-As to DTS, your understanding now is correct.

Paragraph 2- If normal means full range, then the only signal that will be routed to the sub will be LFE info. You should be able to raise the sub level in the player's settings to compensate.

Para 3- Basically yes. 5.1 specifically refers to surround sound formats. The .1 refering to the LFE channel. The 6 ch. input refers to any format using 6 ch.

Para 4 - I don't believe that your rec'r has digital ins. For DVD play you only need connect with the 5.1/ 6 ch ins and outs. Your player is decoding and the reciever is adjusting volume.
