I have a Hitachi 53" HDTV. The only place for the center speaker is on top of the TV. The speaker is an Infiniti approx. 8 lbs. Will it cause interference with the picture and is it too heavy to be on the TV?

To repeat:

Dorten, place the center speaker on the TV. If the shielding is inadequate, the picture would be noticeable. Besides, the magnetic field of the speaker would have to be near the CRTs themselves, not the image, which is merely reflected light. Therefore, it's almost impossible for a rear projector to be affected by a speaker magnet. The weight is negligible.

Two other things:

Position the front edge of the speaker even with the front edge of the T.V. to avoid unwanted reflections off the top of the set.

Angle the speaker downwards until it "points" directly at the listening position, at approximately ear height for the listener. This will avoid much of the signal going over your head, and will avoid unwanted reflections off the ceiling.

Virtually all center speakers are shielded and designed to be place on top of the TV. You should be fine.

Correction to placement

if the speaker has enough weight in the back have it hang over the edge by .5 - 1 inch to make it sound better.

If your system has it, delay the center channel a couple milliseconds. The center channel is almost always closer to you than your front LR speakers.

To be a bit more precise, delay 1 ms. per foot closer.
