I'm glad to hear you went with the DST-3000. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me.

Put me on the list for the reviews.

[email protected]

If anyone is looking to get rid of one of the Sony's I'd be interested.

Could you either share the review of the four HDTV DSS receivers you mentioned or tell me where I might find the reviews? Thanks.

Check out the AVS forum. The new Zenith DTV-1080 is a real winner. I've had mine for about a week now.

I have not used the Toshiba HD receiver, but I understand it is the Hughes model with a new label. The Hughes HD sat will output 1080i on component cables and upconvert all non-HD to 1080i, but the upconversion looks terrible. To switch to 480i requires two button pushes on the Hughes remote, then it will output 480i ONLY on the S-video and composite outputs, which requires switching my TV input too! The TV's scan converter to progressive looks waaaay better than the Hughes' converter to 1080i, but what a freakin' hassle to switch back and forth.
The RCA HD sat unit works very similarly, but the switch to HD/SD is inconveniently located only on the front panel or buried in the menu. Fortunately it only upconverts to 480p (or 540p), and while not as good as the TV's scan converter, is tolerable and is best left alone to avoid switching hassles.
The Sony HD allows me to set the component cables to output 1080i when on an HD channel, and auto switch back to 480i output on all other channels on the same cables. All the HD TVs (Sony, Pioneer, Toshiba)I have used this on will auto sense this input and let 1080i pass while upconverting 480i to 480p with it's built in converter (better quality) instead of using the sat receiver's scan converter.
I am looking forward to using the Zenith and Panasonic units to see if they will output like the Sony; HD whwn I want it, and SD on all other channels, let the TV do it's conversion if it must.

Personally I think all these converters suck, none look as smooth and artifact free on the non HD channels as standard sat on a standard TV. I am tempted to try a DVDO or Faroujda, (I think these will pass native HD and only upconvert SD on the same cables) but don't have the bucks.
Am I the only one that would rather see these cheap scan converters left off the machines (or at least provide us with an on/off switch), or am I doing something wrong? The artifacts of upconversion are definately not worth the increased resolution in my book. Please reply to my lengthy comment, and tell me what you think

I am thinking about changing out my DTC100 with the Sony receiver and I own A Pioneer 510HD elite. Were you able to get a resove of the positioning issue? Also does the Sony have the ability to auto detect the HD signal and put it through the component output without having to manually switch like the RCA/
Thanks for your help

Applejam,

I agree...leave the conversion off! I always use these units with a Runco or Faroudja so I don't want their crappy upconversion!

FYI, the RCA "Fetch" button can be set to toggle the HD/SD function instead of performing the normal fetch. It is a menu setting in software that has been available for quite some time. Dowload the newest version! The off air access is still menu driven and a pain-in-the-ass, when will manufacturers learn that consumers want discrete codes for power, source selection and aspect ratios???

randy

Also, did anyone else with a Toshiba DST-3000 get hit by the new DirecTV "upgrade" that made the guides all disappear?? Toshiba apparently didn't follow the rules and is now paying the price by sending out brand new units to get the functionality back!!

Yikes! I was just wondering about that. Noticed it yesterday. I don't see anything on the Toshiba site about it. Did you contact tech. support?
