I live in Salinas, Ca. I have Directv with an HD DVR. Directv does not offer the local channels (Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC) in HD. The local cable company, Comcast, and DishNetwork both do have the local channels in HD. I contacted Directv and looks like they will not have the local channels in HD for a long time to come. Seems it will cost them a lot of money to do so. So with two HD televisions, we watch many programs in HD but not the local channels.
So I either switch to DishNetwork or find some device that will allow us to be able to watch all of the local channels in HD (when you watch an NBA game in HD on TNT and then watch a game on sunday on NBC in standard format, it is a huge difference).
I was reading about the Terk Technology HDTVi UHF/VHF HDTV Indoor Antenna as as a possible solution. Does anyone have any suggestions so we can get HD on our local channels or is it not possible?
Thank you

You should be able to receive local channels over the air via antenna. Perhaps someone from the Salinas area can answer on availability. Also you can go to to list out stations in your area.

With regards to antenna, this is a trial and error procedure. Get a low end antenna and try it out... make sure you can return it. It would be best if you have some knowledge of direction. I am fortunate in Toronto because all stations are south of me so I point the antenna south and thats it.

In Salinas, perhaps you have to point north towards San Francisco. Once you are getting some stations, invest in a better antenna... possibly outdoors if feasible. Once again, start with something simple... dont invest a lot in an antenna until you know what you can receive.

I live in stockton ca and just have got tired of paying high cable/dish prices.
I have a Vizio lcd HD 1080 tv and I installed a RCA ant1650 flat panel amplified antenna. you have to go to the tv menu and scan for channels, which I did and now I get all the local channels free, and if they are broadcast in HD, then that is what I receive, all for free. the cable and dish/direct tv providersa are just ripping us off!. you sign on for what sounds like a good price and they just keep raising the prices. you can buy the RCA antenna from I scored a good used one which looks like brand new and it was half the cost of a new one ,plus no tax and free shipping.
