I've seen commercials with certain shows saying that it's available in "Global HD". According to the the main map for this site, global doesn't go hi-def till next spring, so what's the deal here? Does global have hi-def in cable or expressvu but just not OTA yet or what?

Exactly - on cable and satellite. Global *must* build an off-air transmitter to maintain their HD channel permit, but they're allowed up to 2 years to do it, and can start broadcasting on cable right away.

Some channels try to stretch this period out as much as possible, and others (like City and CBC) try to get off-air going as soon as possible.

Daniel,

I don't know anything about "Global" but what I have read about getting a license to put up a TV transmitting antenna is a daunting process. Does "Global" already have a analog transmtting channel ?

Don: Global is one of the large networks here in Canada. So they have analog transmitting channels across the country. They are part of a conglomerate that includes specialty TV channels as well as radio stations, web sites and news papers

Global 41.1 has been HD for well over a year. Did they recently go back to analogue?

Are you getting all the US HDTV outlets from Maple alright?

Global broadcast a digital signal. Digital does not mean HD. That said Global does carry some HD programming -- Bones, Fringe, etc. HD and digital is not mutually exclusive.

As far as I know Global's still broadcasting fine. However they're not my first choice for HD (versus the original US network) due to somewhat soft picture and an annoying volume "normalizer".

Lerey,
I live at Major Mac & Bathurst. I get Global HD at mid quality (signal strength 40 as on Sharp HDTV) with indoor antenna. If I move the antenna out of my window, the quality is much better (signal strength 60 as on Sharp HDTV).

Most HDTV sets come with built-in signal-strength meter. Search your TV menu for this function.
