Just got my 4000 box from Telewest. All is working fine. The lack of audio out is a shame but I can live with that. Much faster on Interactive.
Never got a 4000 remote though. Kept my old one as the guy said it worked fine with the new box.
Very happy with the service. I spoke to 1 person at Telewest. Told her about the problem with TIVO and the 1000 boxes. She spoke to technical and agreed to change it. Cost £25 but I don't mind that. Took 3 days from start to finish!

However the Info button would be really nice. If anyone has it please post it.

Thanks all

Anthony

All too easily, by delivering an STB software
update through the network.

Thanks for that, but since it only seems to be a problem for me, it's unlikely that Telewest have updated the STB software to stop accepting Pronto commands.

Before the STB stopped responding, I was trying all the unused RC5 series 10 codes in order to see if I could find one for the elusive 'info' button. Is it possible that doing this could have turned off the ability of the STB to receive RC5 codes?

I tried them all as well, however my box is still accepting them OK. I imagine I might get hit in the next few days or so, as this latest software update comes to my area. Where I am in Croydon we seem to be among the last to get STB software updates.

What do you think NTL are doing with all these spare 4000 remotes?, as they won't leave them behind for 1000 users as 1000 remotes work with the 4000 unit?

My box in Edinburgh has stopped working via the RC5000 and TiVo after the update last night. This seems to have affected Central Scotland.

Telewest have confirmed it as a fault - please call 0151 477 7590 to complain. The engineers want to fix it but the bosses are saying no! It was a software update that caused it and it is being rolled out region by region.

You may have to get a dongle for TiVo to work.

I called the number, they were very helpful, and they are aware of the problem say they are trying to fix it. No harm in other people calling though to make sure it's a priority for them!

Oooh

That's very close to my old Telewest number, I'm glad I'm not there now, actually it would be nice to be there as they pay excellent contract rates...

Ask Adam Singer - Telewest CEO!

It looks like the Guardian is going to have a question and answer session with Adam Singer, Telewest chief executive, live online @ 3pm on Wednesday March 6

How disappointing - I received my 4000 box from TW today and it is not playing ball with the pronto :-(

I've tried all the Pace files from this site (apart from Gary Connoley's & Claude Adams, which upset Prontoedit on my system) and none cause the rx light on the 4000 to blink.

I'm working on the assumption that my box came with the latest OS revision or the tech downloaded it during the install.

This some stuff from the service menu, it'd be interesing to see whether it tallies with other boxes that stopped working:

Hardware Version: P3.197

Code Release Version: P3:80f.02.CR2

Build Date: Made On Feb 11 2002. 16.:25:22

Assuming my problem is the STB software issue, I have very little faith in TW's ability to resolve it in a timely manner. It's just a question of how long I can hold off the call to Sky (< a week, for sure).

Take heart Ben, I am a Pronto user, I rang TW today (for the first time) to enquire about the 4000 upgrade. I told them that I wanted to get a TIVO (I don’t), the CS guy was aware that Tivo’s and programmable remote controls needed the 4000 box, however he went on to explain that they were experiencing problems which meant that even if I had the 4000 box, my problems wouldn’t be over.

Firstly I was surprised to get a straightforward and basically accurate response from TW, considering some of the horror stories from other people on this thread. I also suspect that TW have probably been in-undated by calls from unhappy Tivo users, so will want to have a fix ASAP.

Secondly, if the problem was indeed caused by a software upgrade, then from my experience as a software developer, It should be relatively easy to revert the affected code and fix the problem. The problem will be getting the fixed code through whatever QA/Release (bureaucracy) procedures TW have in place.

Thanks for your thoughts mpruden. We'll see, I guess.

BTW, I emailed Telewest's Adam Singer an hour or so ago at the address he gave out on the Guardian forum... their mailserver bounced it.

Not exactly encouraging.

Well, my DI4000 box has, as of this morning, stopped responding to standard IR.

On the positive side though, the problem it seemed to have with switching my widescreen TV's aspect ratio has been fixed!

Give with one hand, take with the other....

I'm wanting to buy a pronto, although have a telewest Di400/T pace stb. I've been reading this thread with interest - and notice that certain 4000 series do work. Could anybody enlighten me as to whether my stb is one of those compatible.

Many thanks

Adrian

You are possibly confused, because whilst some have reported theirs work, whilst some don't, there is a reason for this.

Telewest stagger their software rollouts across the country, so that whilst some user's STBs stopped working, others who had not had the update yet continued to work.

By now, I can assume that just about all of the DI4000 boxes have been updated - so this won't make a difference to you.

If you currently use a DI1000 or 2000 I would recommend NOT upgrading until this problem is fixed.

Thanks Eddie. Can you clarify that what you are saying is that subsequent to the upgrades, the 4000 series do not work with prontos?

Incidentally, I am now considering a Compaq iPaq as I believe they can transmit IRDA and are not much more than a pronto. Just a thought...
