I have a no name brand of USB to serial (I'm not kidding there is no name on the box, it's generic) Anyway I've had it a long time and could not get it to work with any RS232 software. I tried it after reading all these various USB serial adapter thread and now IT WORKS. I'm faily convinced Microsoft fixed something in the Win 2000 service pack 3. I tried everything and it didn't work until after I put SP3 on and then it work without changing anything, just plugging it in. If anyone tried before without success on Win 2000, try again after SP3 and report the results.

I have the latest drivers for the Belkin USB to serial adapter. still nothing. Belkin tech support says it's not their driver. Either Belkin is full of it, MS has a problem, or it is ProntoPro that needs an update for windows 2000.

FWIW: My USB to Serial device is using:
Driver Provider: FTDI
Driver Version: 1.0.2082.0

(Might be a hint to who made it?)

Does someone know if there is a possibility to program the pronto, with pronto-edit, by a USB cable?

I hava a laptop with 3 USB outlets and no serial port.
I only have a BELKIN SERIAL ADAPTER for converting the USB to Serial.
There is only one device that is not responding to the adapter and it is the pronto...

Is there someone with the same problem?

It's using a chip made by FTDI in Scotland.

It's a brilliant and inexpensive way to USB-enable legacy hardware.

They also make a USB/serial converter which they call an evaluation unit. It sells for about $35-40 and is one of the best adapters I have used.

If you buy it from their US distributor, place your order by phone - their online ordering is NOT secure.

I am using a Marantz RC5000 1Mb (Setup V2.3, Sys V4.8, App V5.1) and have just updated to Win XP SP1. I was previously using ME OK.
Now I cannot get my remote to talk to my PC at all, via serial COM1 or using my serial to PDA USB, (I read elsewhere that people are having trouble with serial to USB connectors). Does anyone have any ideas?
I usually run an infrared device on COM1 and think I have managed to tell XP not to run this.

You may have to tell your BIOS that COM1 isn't infrared.

I'm using a controllers from FTDI and Maxstro under win98. FTDI connects great with Pronto, but my Crestron IR learner CNXLIR operates only via USB>serial converter from Maxstro. I suppose, both of that controllers has a very short internal data buffer unlike on-board UARTs, so you cannot have a real guarantee that your current functional adapter will support new devices or saves functionality at new OS...

The FTDI chip has a 384 byte receive buffer and 128 byte transmit buffer.

I could not get the Belkin F5U103 to work with my Gateway Solo 9550 laptop. Following the advice on this site, I got the Keyspan USA-19QW. Works like a charm (had to map it to COM1, though).

i just spoke to "dave" at Marantz Customer service in Chicago on Monday (6-23-03) about the USB to 9-pin adapter issue. I stated that owned a 5000i and I was running Windows XP on a VAIO desktop that had no 9-pin serial port. "Dave" recomended the Radio Shack Adapter and told me that it had the least ammount of conflict. He also told me that I MUST configure it to COM PORT #1 if I expect it to work. My hats off to Dave for his help on this. I have not tried it yet, but if there is a problem, I will make another posting.

Just where in Touch Screen setup did you tell it to look for Com2? Registry Hack? Could be handy for me if I could get it working on Com2....
