Is it possible to enter the hex IR Code directly in to the software? or do you have to have an original remote to learn the codes? If not this shold be a feature that should be added. Export of the Hex code would be helpfull as well.

Steven,

I can attest to the ability to directly enter Philips/Marantz RC type codes in the software on screen. There is also a "library" lookup of all or most of same in the software to make entry easy. The code is not what I would call "hex" as such but more likely just a proprietary numbering scheme, which is why I wouldn't suspect that other code storage and entry is quite as easily done. There also could potentially be licensing issues if were to be within a software system.
I know that those who know the specifics at Philips visit here regulary so I'll leave it to them to provide any additiobal details available.

The latest version of ProntoEdit allows the captured IR code to be opened up in a text window. It's formatted as a list of hex numbers, and can be copied & pasted (and edited, though it's in an internal format that I don't think we're planning to document). That's how I've been posting IR codes in some of the other threads here.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the final version, and will be posted on the web site in January.

Please consider documenting these kinds of formats. As a commercial software vendor I realize that opening up can cause you a lot of support grief, and limits your flexibility to make changes later. However, with such a 'hackable' (I mean that in the original sense) product, allowing others to assist in extending the capabilities of the unit can only be good for it. This thing could be another Palm Pilot-like success story.

Along the same lines, it would be great if you could publish the specs for the serial communication port -- I don't mean the cable pinouts, but the protocol. That way you'd have people writing Pronto control software and libraries for Mac, UNIX, etc, without you taking heat for not writing software for them.

It's not entirely my call, Bob. Part of the problem is that the ability to directly edit IR codes was added late in the day, and Pronto itself doesn't do very rigorous error-checking of the code before trying to send it.

I seriously doubt we'd publish the serial port protocol, since it's the same mechanism that's used to upgrade the firmware. We would have no control over the quality of software that someone might write if we made the protocol public, and that could cause us a serious support burden.

Philips doesn't make enough profit on the units to be able to sustain a high support load for it. I can't speak for anyone else, but I want Philips to see this as a successful product, so that it will get the kind of support (s/w upgrades, new models) I think we'd all like to see.

Perhaps other approaches might open it up sufficiently for others. Publishing the format of CCF files, for example.
