Sam,
The remotes are completely different, so it would be easier to describe what they have in common. The device codes in each of them use the same numbering scheme, for example the Kenwood receiver code is 0313 in both of them, but the URC-8800/9800 have a much larger library of devices. Plus, both remotes can use advanced codes.

The programming instructions are completely different between both remotes.

The Cinema 7 can learn to almost any button whereas the URC-8800 can only learn to the designated learning buttons.

Bottom line, even if they were the same price, i would still recommend the URC-7800 over the URC-8800, but when you factor in that the URC-8800 costs about $80 and the URC-7800 costs about $28, there's no comparison.

Rob.

I saw four or three listings for this remote at yahoo stores didn't look for URLs.
Go to www.yahoo.com click on shopping than type in the model number and you'll find them.

Does this new thing have back lighting? I could be happy with the cinema 7 if it just had this feature. am i supposed to hold it up to the light before i use it in the dark?

Well, the Radio Shack 15-1994 is functionally almost identical to the Cinema 7 and it does have backlighting, so maybe that's the one you need.

All these places are out of the 8780. I called oneforall and they don't have any info on it. Huh...

I had the 15-1994 but it was missing something - can't remember now.

Probably the code for your receiver, they had to drop a number of useful device codes to make room for the many Radio Shack/Tandy/Realistic codes that Radio Shack demanded that they put in there. Personally I think it would have been better to drop some of the ancient cable box codes, but they didn't ask me!
