Any one seen the new URC-8780? Is it the same size as the 9800/8800/8600? Or is it smaller, like the 7800/7200?

Thanks.

I don't have one yet, but from what I hear it's similar to the Producer 8's but it doesn't have a "Home Theater" button. It's priced cheaper at about $50. I don't know if it will have any learning ability yet, but it will have a fresh library of device codes including codes for both ReplayTV and TiVo.

Will it have codes for Dishplayer 7200 ?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best remote for the 7200 ?

I have a Cinema 7, which I understand can "learn" most of the DP functions, but before I take on that tedious process, I like to make sure there's no other option.

Thanks,

I would be surprised if the 1005 code isn't in there.

Is this unit actually on the market yet? Couldn't find anything at the UEC site.

What stores are carrying it?

I spoke with OFA Tech Support today and while on the phone I asked about this model. The person asked
a supervisor and what I got back was that the
URC-8780 will be based on the URC-7800. They indicated
that it may have additonal device codes. No release
information. That was about all that I could pick out
of them.

Here's a direct quote from the UEIC rep that told me about the URC-8780:

"We are also set to launch the 8780 in November - this model is similiar to the 8800, without the Home
Theater mode. The 8780 has the same programming as the 8800, but will target a lower price point of $49.00, and they will include Replay and Tivo codes.

Hmm. Doesn't sound like they've "fixed" the learning capability yet.

THe way it has been explained to me, it would take a complete re-design to get the learning to work on the Producer 8 class of remotes in the same way that it does in the Cinema 7 style remotes.

Rob:

Whelp, it looks like one or the other of us got some bum dope. Most
likely me as the Tech Support folks are apparently sub-contractors.
Thanks for clearing that up.

Ok, can you help me a bit more? I have never worked with an URC-8800.
What are the differences in programmability between that one and the
URC-7800???

Also, what does the Home Theater mode do? How does it work?

Lastly, what did you mean by Replay and Tivo codes? I am not familiar
with these terms. Are these new components or what?

Check out the manual for the URC-8800 on my site, it should answer both of these questions.

ReplayTV and TiVo are the two current brands of "Personal Video Recorders", check out http://www.replaytv.com and http://www.tivo.com for more info.

If you want to buy your last remote....

...suck it in...and plunk down the money for a Marantz RC2000 or better yet , get the touchscreen remote...the Marantz RC5000. I did and have never been happier. It is Flawless. A little learning curve, but once your past that, its a breeze. By the way....I have about 12 used remotes to sell if your interested :) If I add up all of the trial remotes I have bought....I could have paid for the Marantz the first time and then some.

Actually, Rob, the manual for the 8800 on your
site doesn't mention the the word 'theater' in it.
Do you have a URL that describes these home theater
capabilities? [Link: hifi-remote.com]

Will you be posting a link on your site to the 8780
when you find a retail source for it?

Thanks,
Ted Ede

Thatks for the tip Ted, I guess I forgot to put the Home Theater instructions in there, I will add them soon. In the meantime you can use the OFA manual for the old URC-8080 which includes the instructions, click here: [Link: oneforall.com]

As for the URC-8780, it isn't officially available yet, let's wait and see who sells it and for how much.

Whelp, I guess that I got blown off on those questions!

I am on travel and have gone to three different Circuit Cities trying to
read the manual and get these questions answered. I dono if I can tell
from just reading the manual. I would have to sit down and play with the
URC-8800 a while to figure out the real differences.

Could someone who has worked with both units maybe give me the significant differences in a nut shell? In other words I was just looking for bottom
line.
