I'd like to get either the learning versions of either the Cinema 7
(urc-7800) or a/v Producer 8 (urc-8800), and need more in-depth info
to help me decide. Any help would be appreciated!


1. I read on another forum that the Cinema 7 can have almost ALL of
its keys reprogrammed to learning functions (despite the fact that
the manual only shows support for the 4 L keys), and that the a/v 8
can only use its "L" keys for learning functions, due to software
differences between the two remotes. Can anyone confirm if this is
indeed true about the a/v 8? (ie. does the fact that the a/v 8 has
48 possible learning functions while the Cin 7 has 28 or so mean
the Cin 7's learning memory is more limited?)

2. Does the Cinema 7 have 32k memory like the a/v 8 for learning
functions, or do they both have the same amount of memory?

3. Is the Cinema 7 also an upgradeable model like the a/v producer?
(ie. would I be able to send in a remote that is not supported by it
and have OFA program the codes into it, as they can do with the a/v
producer?)

4. Does the a/v producer's display describe the function of the key
you pressed, even if it was a key you programmed with an advanced
function, or does it basically just tell you which device mode
you're in? (e.g. If you programmed VCR index functions on the arrow
keys, will the display read "Index" when you press the arrow
[index] key? If not, can you program it to read "Index" on the
display for that specific key?)

5. Will the Cinema 7 retain your codes forever between battery
changes, as does the a/v 8?

1) The A/V Producer DOES have more learning capacity. However it is more limited where you can use it. The Cinema 7 gets about 28 keys, anywhere you like. The A/V Producer gets about 48, however you can only place them on the Learning keys. On both remotes you can put macros on any button.

2) I believe the Cinema 7 has less memory -- hence fewer learnable codes.

3) I believe so, but I could be wrong (I honestly haven't heard).

4) The LCD does not display the function name, just the device you're in. It also aids in programming.

5) Either "forever" or "long enough to change batteries". :-)

Yes, the A/V Producer 8(URC-8800)is indeed limited to the L keys for its learning function. Contrary to what Daniel stated above you cannot assign macros to any key on the 8800. There are only two keys designated for that function, macro & macro2. Overall I like the 8800 but Oneforall's support of the product leaves alot to be desired!

Does the Cinema 7 have the key mover function that the Producer 8 has? I know that you can assign different devices but can you move other keys?

To me this is the most useful function of the Producer 8.

The Cinema7 does support key moving (remapping) using the 994 program sequence. You cannot, however, move learned keys.
