I am a new mx-500 owner and I am not impressed with the mapping of the keys for things like my HD Tivo... I think I am going to go with activity based programming and once into an activity load the code for most of the keys and then "learn" the rest of them... including customizing the lcd buttons to include the omitted functions... Is that what others have done?

You might find it easier just to learn everything instead of trying to use a mix of pre-programmed codes and learning.

I'm not sure I follow you exactly, but here's how it's typically done...

First the devices are programmed. That may include learning additional commands or any command or button label customization. Then macros are created on top of the corresponding buttons, such as "TV" for watching TV, etc. The "activities" are essentially press-and-hold macros placed on a device button.

From what I got out of your post, it sounded like you were going to create activities before programming the components completely, but you shouldn't do that, since you need the commands from the devices in order to create those activities. At the end of your macro, you can have the remote end on a different device. If I misunderstood you, sorry about that. :)

I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.

Thank you,
Damon DG

I agree with Fletch. Edit all of your LCD-labeled buttons in advance (including the MAIN page), then learn all the commands from your original remotes. Editing the laebels is the most time consuming part, but once that's done , learning only takes a few minutes per remote.

Oh yeah, apply the AUX 155 preprogrammed code to each device before learning to avoid potential problems with FAV macros.

Yes learn. But, change the remote address of the tivo from "0", to any other. So if you get another tivo, you won't have redo two of them.

Thanks for all of the responses!!! This forum is really helpful...

Editing the buttons and then learning sounds like a good way to go for me...

After I "learn" the lower level buttons below the devices can I still add macros to the top level?

If so, this is going to work out just fine.... :-)

Thanks again everyone.

RA,

Yes, once you learn your commands, you can then program your macros to the buttons on the Main page.

Thank you,
Damon DG
