can seem to find this answer, can i use my mx850 to control my x10 rf lamp module?

Not directly - no RF universal remote can directly control any rf appliance. You need an IR-543 which lets you use any IR universal remote to control X10 modules. It's available on smarthome.com for $30.

No, RF is such a wide spectrum that there's no standards. RF codes are not meant to be learned.
That's why you would need the IR module.

I'm not entirely sure, someone else can probably answer this more definitively. But I believe it's an FCC thing that the particular bit of spectrum a given RF device uses is reserved for that RF device alone, to prevent interference. Hence, no direct universal remote control of RF.
Luckily, with X10, the solution is simple and fairly cheap.
