I will try to fix this LCD on my own. I appreciate the advice from others here about how to do that. I have used the search feature of the forum and found details from one member on taking it apart and showing the connections to the LCD. I will start with that.
Thanks everyone for their input.

The LCD connects to the main PCB with a ribbon connector. The LCD itself has a flexible PCB with a couple of components on, but it does seem to be unrepairable without specialist tools.

If Logitech would sell the display as a spare part, lots of people would then not have to buy replacement remotes!!.

Thanks tankstage. I have found a couple LCD's on ebay. I know it is a crap shoot as to how long they may function. I will take mine apart first before buying a new one just in case the ribbon connector has come loose.
I doubt that is the case since I still get the blue light on the LCD.
I appreciate the help.

You implied that Logitech was not willing to do anything after your remote broke out of warranty after being dropped. Then we find out they actually offered you a 50% off coupon, which is a lot more than other companies would do.

If you had just said you were disappointed and didn't want to buy another one - fine. I'm just tired of people who complain about companies not fixing things that are clearly out of warranty just because it's a "known problem". Especially when you contributed to the problem.

Sorry for snapping at you.

I bought another LCD from eBay for $26.00 shipped to the house. I replaced it tonight and everything is functioning properly again. I am thinking about wrapping the remote in bubble wrap. LOL.
Thanks to all those that replied to my post. I appreciate the help and even the criticism. Even though I am still a little peeved with Logitech, I realize that it was unrealistic of me to demand a new remote that far out of warranty. I still think it is a very fragile device but that is the case with a lot of electronics and I need to take more care with this item.

This is a good forum and I appreciate having a place to come to and vent some, but more importantly, to find valuable technical advice from those more experienced than myself.

Thank you all very much,
Fish

Thanks for this thread guys... I also have the dreaded blue screen of death on my 890 and the standard battery/firmware tricks are not working. They did the last time this happened 6 months ago but not now, so I've ordered the replacement LCD on the basis this worked for you Fish, so crossing fingers it works for me.

My 2c on this is that yes obviously people need to accept responsibility if the remote has been dropped/damaged in their care, however there are MANY people complaining about this same problem with 880's and 890's, many of whom say they didn't drop it at all. I can't vouch for anyone else but I definitely did not drop mine - I witnessed the screen go from working to not working while I had it in my hand. Therefore I'm quite convinced this is a design fault and not just down to people being careless.

Logitech must know this by now and should own up to it IMO, and at a minimum offer the 50% discount for those customer's who experience this, wihtout a fight, if their remotes are out of warranty. I don't think that's an unreasonable ask given this is a design issue.

I have the same problem with my Harmony 890. I think like afishy1 that a remote of 350$ should be of better quality and more durable. I won't buy another Harmony remote. But what else could I buy?

@rdstott
It would be nice if you could tell us the results of changing your LCD just like afishy1 did. If it works, I'll order one me too!

I followed your lead and bought the $26 replacement screen on ebay. Took me about 5 minutes to replace it, and everything is working great...

I had tried every other "solution" - software, firmware, battery pull, safe mode, etc, with no luck. Figured I'd give the screen a shot before buying a new remote.

Thanks for the tip...

Yep likewise just got my new screen and 5 mins later everything working again like new. So I make that 3 out of 3 for LCD replacements - if the other solutions don't work this is the one to go for, better than a new $350 remote!

Well, I got the new LCD display today, but it still doesn't show anything except for a blank blue screen. Guess I'm not as lucky as the others. Anyone have any ideas, or is my remote just plain dead? (everything else seems to work on the remote; it just doesn't show anything on the screen)
