Can one use the RF functions of the 890 remote on the compatible Direct TV HD DVR's? These DVR's have the capability of RF.

No. It is illegal for one company to use the same RF frequency as another company, unless they're both using Z-wave (DirecTV is not). This has to be done, otherwise devices from different mfrs would interfere with each other (the tv remote opens the garage door and vice versa, etc.).
Z-wave uses a common frequency with digital addressing (think of it as a computer network with each device having an IP address so the packets don't get confused) so that's not a problem.
The 890 only communicates with the RF extender and other 890 remotes via RF or other products via Z-wave. Won't work on DirecTV.
