JLET - Several of the LCD buttons under the "Device Mode" work as discrete commands, so I assume the default direct method is the right one. The trouble I am having now is that in the device setup mode on the webpage, I never see a request for the label name AND its associated command(s). I never see a drop-down screen that asks for the commands. I only see a list and a request for the Input Name. On my Mitsubishi list of inputs (shown on the screen when I push the INPUT button on the Mitsubishi remote), the ones that are in use are INPUT-1(for the VCR), COMP-3 (for the DVD), and HDMI-2 (for the Sat). The corresponding commands on the Logitech webpage are INPUT1; INPUTCOMP2,INPUT NEXT; INPUT DTV. I cannot find any way on the Logitech webpage to get the TV to respond to the Harmony 550 commands. And, I do not have an INPUT NEXT button on the Mitsubishi remote.

1) Device > More Options > Adjust Input.
2) How do you change inputs for your TV using the original remote?
Select "I go directly to the input I want", then click "Next" at the bottom.
3) Review the list of inputs and, if necessary, make changes by editing the Input Names.
Note: These are input labels not commands. Click "Next" at the bottom.
4) What command do you use to get your device to go to this input xxx.
Select "I don't have the original remote, but I know the commands that are used".
Click on the little "v" symbol to see the list of commands (drop-down list), and select the correct one you found worked in device mode. Click Next and repeat step 4 for all inputs.

Note 1: The database entry (dataset) for you device will have a lot more commands that your OEM remote because it represents the entire "brand" rather than just your particular model. Just ignore your OEM remote. Use it only to teach missing command(s) if applicable.

Note 2: When I added your "Mitsubishi LT-46231 TV" device to my setup, it did not ask if I have the original remote. So I don't know why you keep mentioning that the website is asking you to press button on your original remote.

Thanks to both of you who have helped me. I appreciate it very much. Finally, following JLET's step-by-step guidance, the 550 WORKS !!!! Never, in a thousand years, would I have guessed that I had to try all of the 15 pages of inputs on the 550 remote for the DEVICE, write down the ones that work directly, make up a list of names, specify that I do NOT have the original Mitsubishi remote, and go through a list of commands to teach the 550 how to select the names that I chose. Why on earth would the Logictech software require me to state that I do NOT have the OEM remote? I don't know if either AKIRBY or JLET works for Logitech, but if so, I think you should work with the company to change the webpage and the software so that an ignoramus (like me) can discover on his own that I have to specify that I do NOT have the OEM remote and then go through all the gymnastics required to program the remote. It just does NOT work to have people who know what they are doing write the software for people who know what they are doing. AGAIN ---- thanks and thanks to both of you !

Here is a general clue. When you are faced with a "childish" interface, put your thinking hat on. It's time to think outside the box.

Typically you don't have to do all those things. Most devices work out of the box with the default settings or with minor tweaking. It's rare that you have to go through that many steps. It sounds like the command set for your TV is different than previous models so the commands don't match exactly.

And no, jlet and I don't work for Logitech. We've just been hanging out here for a few years.

Plus I am a retired H/W engineer. We love designing around limitations imposed by "a**holes". It's in our blood.

In any case, I am grateful to both of you for your help. Glad you were hanging out in the forum. I had called Logitech for help, but did not know where to begin to describe the problem. I also sent them an e-mail with a fairly complete description, but they never replied.

And I'm a current IT guy and former unix/c/oracle programmer. So I guess we have both ends covered.

I put a review of the 550 on the Amazon webpage (that's where I bought it). I gave it a rating of two stars out of five, on the basis of the great difficulty I had in getting it to work, plus the inconvenience of the very small buttons. I also included the good news that I was finally able to find help, thanks to two patient experts on Remote Central !

"Your TV tried to set TV_input state to the value 'HDMI2,' which is not one of the values defined for that state." means that in the activity that has to go to HDMI2, the input doesnt match the list. which means in the activity it could look like this.."HDMI 2", and on the list it appears as "HDMI2", notice the space.....the list and activity have to match exactly
whats so hard about following instructions?
