I had a computer built with the primary purpose being to convert my hundreds of vinyle albums to cd. I am ready to go, but need to purchase a new turntable. I am seriously thinking of the Technics SL1200M3D. The reviews suggest that it is the best. I am looking for any advice I might be able to get concerning the Technics. I have never owned a completely manual turntable. ADVICE, anyone! SP

Can't tell you about that particular turntable, but I have owned exactly two turntables in my life. My first was a Technics SL-B2. I still own it, but had to retire it, as the motor isn't holding a constant velocity anymore. I replaced it with a Technics SLBD-20D. Both are excellent turntables, and from using both mine, and friends, I can say that you probably couldn't go wrong with any Technics turntable. They seem to be the best.

I bought my second one for the same purpose, but have never gotten around to ripping the ablums. Huge amounts of time requtired.

I know this smacks of piracy, but I think that we should find a bunch of people with old albums, and new CD collections, find out who has the CD Version, and trade the copies back and forth. Since we own the ablum, all we would be doing is saving the time from sitting down and copying the ablum. I myself have about 400 Albums on vinyl, with a friend fixing to give an unspecified number more soon. I also have about 200 CD's most everything being in the Classic/Hard/Punk rock catagories.

Well, just a thought....

I was kina thinking along the lines of 60's to 90's type albums. You may be pushing the envelope a little with some of yours. But then again, I am sure that others have the same albums, and sharing the ripping would speed up the process for everyone.

If money is no object, try the Linn LP-12. It's still one of the best turntables in the world. A less expensive alternative would be the Rega Planer 2 or 3.

Good luck

To add to the list there's also;

Michell.
SME.
Clearaudio.
Nottingham Analogue.
Pro-ect.
Roksan.
Dual.
Thorens.

Me? Given the choice, having had a Gyrodek, I'd take a Michell Orbe. Probably an SME arm and maybe an Ortofon MC cartridge. Since, however, I'd get little change from £5,000, I'm afraid it's all wishful thinking.
