I read somewhere that HDDVD can't save where you left off in a movie. Once you hit stop or turn of player, it loses its place. So you have to fast forward and try to remember where you left off. This is ridiculous. I'd stick with DVD solely for this reason.

Does Blu-ray have "save point functionality"?

That's more of a player feature rather than a format feature. And no, I don't personally know of a player on either side that has it.

I do know that the PS3 will return to where you left off after hitting Stop and returning to the XMB (but not powering off).

Actually if you watch an HD-DVD or a Blu-ray with a PC and PowerDVD Ultra 7.3, the next time you'll turn it on, PowerDVD will ask you if you want to continue from where you stop the movie or watch it from the start...

Hope this help...

also some movies have bookmarks, so you could fake it on those titles (either format) but then again it is not as simple as stopping or turning things off. You need to remember to bookmark and then to start at the book mark when you turn it back on.

A second trick that work on each movie (depending on player) is to just get the chapter information before turning it off so the FF/REW would be a bit less.

Considering how cheap flash memory is and how easy it would be to add something like this to something so computerized, I honestly don't know why it hasn't been done. Especially on the PS3 with all of its storage.

I mean my Sony DVP-NS999ES made in 2002 saves settings for the last 300 discs played automatically, plus up to 8 other custom bookmarks per disc. 5 years later we get 0?

I think part of it is that there are different menus on both formats so it might not be as simple as it was on DVD. But I agree, it is such a basic feature that it looks like a big oversight.

The PS3 knows enough to return to exactly where you left off when you go back to the XMB, do some stuff, and then return to BD playback... so the memory states can't be that hard to track.
