Once the batteries are initially charged,
the alternator only needs to be large enough to
supply (replace) power actually used. The only
advantage of extra batteries is for extended engine-off
run time.

You only need an increased recharge capacity if
you feel the need to recharge the batteries faster
than the original charger can.

Yeah, but when he said replace, he didn't say with a larger one. It is a reasonable assumption that he meant that, but maybe not: there are batteries that are just fine with a good fast charge plus a trickle charge, and there are batteries that need to have the charging VOLTAGE as well as current reduced when they near full charge, so those chargers are more sophisticated. And using this type of battery with that type of charger can result in sudden autoremoval of battery. And hearing, if you are nearby.

It has been so long since I have been into the different types of rechargeables that I don't remember which ones need which type of charger, but it is not wise to swap one type of battery for another without checking with the manufacturer to see if the same charging circuit will work for both types.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I should have known you engineering types would loose site of the power cord issue and lock onto my battery swap lines. Yes unconditional. The power my gear sees is not the power coming into the home persay. ... I use a 4000 watt power supply that is always in "service". During brown outs when incoming voltage is 106 my equipment see's 110 volts adjustable from any computer to 120 max. The six am daily phase changes that 'ol CL&P does each morning and night never even slightly affects the output wave. While clocks start blinking on the microwaves my theater room gear is just fine. As to the bigger batteries they are best recharged by a constant voltage type system limited to 10 amps so no problem there. If it fails I will fix it making the charger stronger. As Larry wrote I only need to replace the power used and not in a short time. Eventually my house generator will get fired up if we need it. I have way to much time on my hands these days and I get obsessive about my movie watching......

"Yes unconditional."

The rest of us call them uninterruptable power supplies. Unconditional, just doesn't make sense.

BTW, Larry is an electrician...not an EE...as evidenced by his posts.

Talking of wild and whacky, I can recollect Crimson Electrik making some battery powered power amps and some wag making a power amp with some much in the way of smoothing capacitors they had to be brought in in stages.
