Toshiba TVs: can they be set to different unit codes?

I am using a RS 15-1995 to control a downstairs Dishplayer from my upstairs bedroom. I have Toshiba TVs both downstairs (50H71) and in the bedroom (30" CRT, don't know model). I would like the 1995 to control the upstairs TV as well, but both TVs respond to the 0156 codes, which is obviously irritating to those watching TV downstairs.

My question: Is there any way to have different unit codes established on one of the Toshiba sets such that both TVs don't respond to the same codes? Like the ways you can set up multiple ReplayTV units, for example. I have a JP1 cable and have done several upgrades via that method.

I'm not sure which forum to use to post this question, so I am cross-posting it to both the OFA and discrete hunter forums. Sorry if that is a protocol violation (no pun intended...).

Thanks for your help,
Tim

How is a IR remote controling a TV in another room, and on another floor of the house? When IR does not work through walls or floors. Or even around most corners for that matter.

Tim,

AFAIK, there is no second IR command set. I had the same problem untill I retired my 35" Toshiba (the miserable but reliable TOAD, RIP!)

The only thing I can think of is a bit of a kludge, but here goes -- maybe someone else can improve on the idea. I think the 1995 has a base station that works by RF.

Get an IR543 that does IR to x10 ~$40. Put an two x10 appliance modules (~$15 each) in series with the TV's with different addresses. Do a macro to first turn on the appliance module for the desired TV.

You can be much more exotic with wired IR systems or just isolate the Dishplayer and have the base station only communicate with it (put it in a closet) and use two different IR remotes one for each location.

If it is only the problem that the upstairs TV remote activates the Toshiba near the Dishplayer, then you could just use one appliance module and control either the base station or the downstairs TV (Turn it off while issuing commands to the other TV and back on after you are done.)

Jon,

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, the setup doesn't really allow for X10 control. The goal is to have quasi-independent control of both TVs such that someone downstairs can watch TV from one input device (e.g. the Dishplayer, a DVD, OTA reception) and somebody else upstairs can watch either the same input device or a different one. The upstairs TV is cabled to the VCR downstairs, which performs the switching of the various input devices.

So, while it is tempting to be the true "master of my domain" and have X10 control of all devices that I survey, those downstairs might have other ideas...and they have the *real* power and control in this house!

Thanks for the replies,
Tim

Jon is right, the 15-1995 is an RF/IR remote. The remote sends both IR signals directly from the remote itself, and an RF signal that is then converted by a RF-to-IR base station to an IR signal in another room.

OK, that explains it.

You could hide the 1995's basestation, then use the supplied repeater cable to control whatever your watching now. Then when you want to change to a different source, move the cable. You might be able to buy a different cable with two IR repeater heads on it. The cable needs a 3/32 mini-plug.
