I have a Sony RM-VL 1000, it does macros like many, well the problem I have is I may set a macro like this

TV Power
VCR Power
Play VCR

It works GREAT if all the components are off, but if the TV is on it will turn it off, I don’t have a separate power on and off only one toggle power button.

How do I get around that problem without turning off my TV.

It apears that with Discrete codes I can...I do not understand how to program my remote with a discrete code...or even if I can with this remote...is there a FAQ on exactly what descrete codes are and how to use them.

Thanks, Ed,

If your oem remote doesn't have the discretes you need, then there are only two ways to generate discrete codes. They're a UEIC(one-or-all/radio shack) remote or a Pronto remote.

Well I guess I still do not know if the RM-VL 1000 has descretes but I guess not since I did not read it in the docks...is there another way I can get the power to come "on only" and not toggle on and off" with this remote? If I have a computer with IR cant I teach it with some type of software? Is anything available like that?

Again, only the UEIC & Pronto remotes can do this. Your simplest & cheapest solution: buy a UEIC remote (best bet: probably the $20 radio shack 15-2104), program a button to issue the discrete on ("on only") command that you need, then use your sony's learning feature to learn this command from the 2104. Now you see why UEIC and Prontos are so popular:)

Super, I thought a remote to do that would have been 150.00 but I saw a 15-2104 on eBay for $10.00, I will just use that method...thanks for the model number, it helped a lot.

So, how does the Radio Shack remote work so well then? Does it have a built in function to JUST send a "on" or "off" signal? Does it also work with other discrete commands (ie: input selections)? Thanks for the help. Just got my Sony RM-AV3000 today and am eager to learn.
