We are doing a basement media center installation using a 71" rear projection TV. The TV will be recess mounted in one of the walls-the cavity that it will sit in will allow walk through access to the back of the TV. The builder I'm working with is asking for suggestions on how to rough this in. What is the best way to trim out just the dimensions of the TV screen so the TV is as far forward as possible?? The builder plans on using a real simple 3" moulding with a low profile around the bezel-this will work great around the 2" bezel to the top, left and right of the screen...but the bottom of the TV with the speaker presents the challenge. Last time we did this the carpenter trimmed it out so the drywall covered the speaker on the bottom of the TV...but of course this created a problem for mounting the moulding as it had nothing to really bit into (the finish carpenter eventually came back and glued it in place which worked out fairly well).

Thanks for the suggestions.

Which television are you using? Do you want to use the TV Speakers or are you going to use a Surround Receiver for the audio?

good point, SDZD...we are not using the TV speaker in the system-we're using the surround sound system for audio. We are installing a Samsung HL-S7178. Center channel is an in-wall speaker and wil be mounted directly above the TV.

I would first build the television on a shelf. I would leave an inch or two all around the television so you can install remove the TV. Than I would do what you had done the last time. If you are building a cabinet around the TV I would have the carpenter trim out the screen only (you will need a IR emitter on the TV for the Remote signals) Now by having a trim all around the TV you get the built in look.
I hope that this helps.
Also remember that Televisions and electronics produce HEAT so remember to have some ventilation for all of your equipment.

I'd suggest having the carpenter build a larger then needed hole in the wall, and have the cabinet maker build a face frame to trim it out. Unless you plan on having the tv last as long as the hole in the wall. Lots of nice latching hardware to hold the face frame in place, and that way service can be accomplished as needed.
