I'm hoping that someone can help me, its probably a dumb question and it's right in front of my face, but, I've bought myself a new dell lap top, a big change from my compaq that was about 4 years old, but anywa i went to hook to a pronto and i realized there isn't any serial ports, so i'm being informed thst not to many lap tops have them any more, so they sold me an adapter which changes a usb to serial for pda's and they said this would work, but it does not, the port will open but the pronto will not comunicate back, and noones has been able to answer my questions. thanks

Did you tap the screen to wake up the remote prior to downloading? If that doesn't work, go to the Pronto forum and do a search on "usb adaptor". Some types work on some laptops, other types on others.

Generally, from what I've seen and heard the PDA USB to serial coverters do not work. The Keyspan high speed USB to Serial DB converter has been working for me on several remote programming programs without problems.

Better than any answer i can give you, go google.com and search for

keyspan "USB Adaptor"

Because "USB Adaptor" is in quotes, you won't get all twelve thousand entries that have "USB" or "adaptor" or both; adding "keyspan" will keep you from seeing all brands of usb adaptors.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Most of the USB to RS232 I've tried didn't work...
I'm using a PCMCIA card (Silicom Serial/PC Card) that works fine with all system I program (Pronto, Xantech, Crestron and AMX).
The only problem I've got so far is with the Philips software that does'nt recognize any port then COM1...so, I'm using the Tonto software that works much better for me.

Good luck

I had the same problem when I went with a dell laptop too. My solution was to buy the port replicator which has a serial port. You can get them fairly cheap on ebay and while it costs more than an adapter that doesnt work it allows you to dock the laptop for use at home....
